Bring your binoculars to Cyprus

Cyprus plays a vital part in the lengthy journeys of a staggering number of migratory birds. As a result, the spring skies above the island might feature a Bonelli’s Eagle, the only eagle species known to breed in Cyprus, or the flashing blue form of a European Roller. On the island’s famous salt flats you may even see a flock of flamingoes, filter-feeding on an abundant stock of shrimp. Forests, lakes and mountains provide suitable habitats for a diverse array of birdlife. When not searching for Little Owls or Little Egrets, your accommodation is the Atlantica Miramare Beach Hotel (4Q+) in Limassol.

Climate

Akamas Penisula

Located on Cyprus’s west coast, this 23,000-hectare landmass features valleys, gorges and wide sandy bays. Listen for the ‘ca-ca-ca’ sound of a European roller and keep your eyes peeled for the unmistakable black mask belonging to the black-headed bunting, arriving from India. During your time here, you may also hear the unmistakable ‘oop-oop-oop’ call of a hoopoe or catch a glimpse of a swooping Bonelli’s eagle, the only eagle species that breed in Cyprus. You will also have time on the Paphos Headland, home to subalpine warblers, sand plovers and Ruppell’s warblers.

At the Asprokrenmos Reservoir, located ten miles east of Paphos, you might spot the aptly named little owl, active during the daytime.

Full day
Common hoopoe
  • Included on 7 nights itinerary

Akrotiri Marsh and Salt Lake

Stood inside one of the marsh’s hides, you may spot a moustached warbler or jack snipe. Measuring ten hectares, the salt lake is the largest body of water on the island, and one of the most important wetlands in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Full day
A jack snipe in the wetlands
  • Included on 7 nights itinerary

Larnaca Salt Lake

This network of four salt lakes provides an all-you-can-eat shrimp buffet for flamingos. As well as flamingos, its 1,760-hectare size accommodates whiskered terns, white-winged terns and black francolins. Your afternoon will be spent searching for migrating harriers and red-footed falcons in the area around the villages of Kiti and Mazotos.

Full day
A red-footed falcon in flight
  • Included on 7 nights itinerary

Troodos Mountains

Today you head into the Troodos Mountains and Paphos Forest. Your host might point you in the direction of a short-toed treecreeper, or the more familiar Cyprus jay and coal tit. In these mountains is the only place in Cyprus that the red crossbill – whose name comes from the shape of its beak – will breed. In Paphos Forest you may hear the ‘bizz-bizz-bizz’ of a Cyprus warbler, endemic to the island.

Full day
A male red crossbill
  • Included on 7 nights itinerary
