Durrës city tour

With almost 3,000 years of history, Durrës has a reasonable claim to be Albania’s oldest city. Standing as a testament to this long history is Durrës’s amphitheatre, unearthed quite by accident in 1966. It was built in the 2nd century BC under the rule of Emperor Trajan and provided a full capacity of 15-20,000 spectators with gladiatorial contests and dramatic productions.

Stand in the internal tunnels to feel what it would have been like to ready yourself in preparation to meet thunderous applause and even death. Since its foundation in the 7th century BC, Durrës has been passed from the founding Illyrians to Romans, Normans, Byzantines, Venetians, Sicilians, Serbians, Turks, Austrians and Italians. The city’s story is told in the archaeological museum, said to be the largest in the country. Both the amphitheatre and museum can be visited as part of this included city tour.

Tirana city tour

Following breakfast, take a trip to Tirana, Albania’s colourful capital city. Its vibrant, pastel-hued buildings stand in stark contrast to the city’s bleak past under communist rule. During your tour, you will trace the streets that were replanned by Italian architects to focus on Skanderbeg Square, flanked by the grand Et’hem Bey Mosque and the Soviet-built Palace of Culture, now home to the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, as well as the National Library.

The square is named after the 15th-century national hero who fought against Ottoman rule and is slightly pyramidical, rising towards the square’s centre. Visited as part of the tour is Bunk ‘Art 2, a reminder of the city’s dark past. 24 rooms housed within this communist-era nuclear bunker tell stories of political persecution from 1945 – 1991. You will also step inside the National Museum of History, the façade of which is decorated with a huge mural depicting Albanian people through time.

Berat

Berat’s hillside is blanketed by white Ottoman houses and crowned by a once-impressive citadel, earning it the name ‘Town of a Thousand Windows. Following lunch, your tour of the UNESCO-listed city will take you up to this citadel, home to a collection of religious houses and museums.

Stepping inside the Onufri Museum – named after renowned artist Onufri Argitis and spread throughout several holy places – you will be met by sumptuous colour (including Onufri red, created by the painter using a secret formula that has never been revealed), telling religious tales through the medium of art. There are 173 specially selected artworks at which you can marvel before returning to your hotel for dinner.

Elbasan and Belsh

Leave your hotel and travel approximately 50 miles to Elbasan, a modern city that can trace its history back to the second century BC. Scampis – as it was known in ancient times – was an important trading post located close to the Via Egnatia, a route that connected the Adriatic Coast with the city of Byzantium – now known as Istanbul.

During your time in Elbasan, you will take a guided walk along the ruined castle walls before continuing to Belsh, a lake-side development, demonstrating Albania’s forward-thinking modern attitude.
