What to discover
THE VIÑALES VALLEY
Exploring quiet, friendly Viñales Town, pop into the Casa de la Cultura, situated in a lovely old mansion next to the church in the main square, to check out some local art and perhaps pick up some souvenirs.
Near the Hotel Rancho San Vicente, you’ll find the delightfully eccentric Casa de Caridad Botanical Garden. The gardens feature quirky decorations amidst a mixture of medicinal and ornamental plants and flowers, including a wealth of orchids, palm trees and fruit trees. Entry is free, but a donation would be very welcome. Open 8am-5pm.
You can enjoy a riding tour of the glorious Viñales Valley. These gently-paced tours are led by experienced guides who will make sure that you’re happy and comfortable at all times. Each tour is personally planned to suit the customer; for example, 3 hours is the recommended minimum time, but you can extend (or cut short) your trip at any time. You’ll be seated in ultra-comfortable Western saddles (rather like an armchair). The horses are all calm, kind and well-treated - certified by the Institute of Veterinary Medicine. Your tour will take in tobacco farms and a chance to see cigar- rum- and coffee-making, as well as the valley’s glorious red farmland and characteristic ‘mogotes’ (haystack) mountains.
This fabulous beach is all about sun, sand and sea, with everything on offer from catamaran cruising to scuba diving and snorkelling. However, if you’re taking a break from all the wonderful water-focussed activities, you might like to do something a little different, like popping into the House of Rum in Avenida Principal. Here, you can spend a pleasant few hours enjoying a rum-tasting and choosing from their wide selection of rum and cigars… perhaps as gifts to take home?
