Day 1 UK to Beijing

Enjoy your flight

After taking Saga’s included UK door-to-door travel service to Heathrow, depart in the afternoon for your overnight flight to Beijing.

Day 2 Beijing

Stay three nights at the locally rated 4-star New Century Hotel, which enjoys a convenient location in the city's western business district. Its facilities include a restaurant, cafe, bistro bar, lounge, heated indoor swimming pool, gym, sauna and tennis courts. There are 712 elegant guest rooms, each equipped with a television, telephone, minibar, hairdryer and safe. Look forward to a welcome drink and dinner this evening. D

Day 3 Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square

Today's half-day included sightseeing tour starts with a visit to Tian'anmen Square. From here, walk to the Forbidden City, home to the imperial palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties for nearly 500 years. Later, you may wish to join an optional rickshaw ride to the Hutongs. This evening you can enjoy a traditional Peking duck dinner at a local restaurant. B, L, D

Day 4 The Great Wall and Summer Palace

The Great Wall of China

An included tour will take you to Badáling where you’ll see one of the best-preserved sections of the Great Wall. Then, travel to the 18th-century Summer Palace, set in an immense park in Beijing city. The palace was originally used as a refuge from Beijing's summer heat, and you'll see cooling and relaxing features such as Kunming Lake, splendid water-gardens, a graceful 17-arch bridge and, surprisingly, a marble boat. Later you will have the chance to visit a jade carving workshop before dining at a local restaurant. This evening, perhaps join an optional excursion to Beijing's stadiums of the 2008 Olympic Games. Day 5 Beijing to Xi'an


Fly to Xi’an and, on an included visit, tour the Old City Wall which dates from the 14th-century Ming Dynasty. Stay two nights at the locally rated 4-star Grand New World Hotel. The hotel is situated in the city centre and facilities include a restaurant, lounge bar, indoor pool and fitness centre. Each of the 476 rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a television, telephone, safe and free Wi-Fi. This evening you may have the opportunity to attend an optional Tang Dynasty Show. B, L, D

Day 6 Terracotta Warriors

This morning you'll head to the southern edge of Xi’an to visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652AD to store the scriptures brought back from India by Xuan Zang – an important figure in Chinese history. It's then on to view the Terracotta Army comprising 8,000 life-size warriors, each with individual facial features and expressions. In 1974, peasants digging a well approximately 1,400 metres from the tomb of Ying Zheng uncovered the astonishing Terracotta Army, which was designed to follow the emperor into immortality. You’ll also visit the Terracotta Reproduction Factory where you can witness the making process of replica figurines, following the same process used centuries ago. Dinner is included at a local restaurant. B, L, D

Day 7 Xi'an-Chengdu

Transfer to the railway station and transfer to Chengdu on the new high-speed train, passing through the plains of Guanzhong and Hanzhong, and the Dabashan and Qinling Mountains, the latter sometimes referred to as the ‘Szechuan Alps’. After arriving in Chengdu, explore the city with its interesting history including ‘Jinli Ancient Street’, evoking China’s past. Perhaps join an optional Changing Face show this evening. Stay two nights at the locally rated 4-star Tibet Hotel, Chengdu, which is located by the Jinjiang River in downtown Chengdu. B, L, D

Day 8 Chengdu

A giant panda

Visit the Dujiangyan Panda Base – a conservation and research centre dedicated to the Giant Panda. Specialising in the rescue and quarantine of these rare and beautiful creatures, the Panda Base also acts as a safe haven for senior and disabled pandas, with a research facility, hospital, enclosures and an education facility. Learn about and see these extraordinary bears – regarded as a ‘national treasure’ in China. You’ll also visit the Sanxingdui Ruins, regarded as the probable site of a major Bronze Age city. B, L,D

Day 9 Suzhou

Grand Canal

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Wuxi, Upon arrival transfer to Suzhou where you can enjoy a short cruise on the Grand Canal before visiting the Embroidery Institute. Stay at the locally rated 4-star Pan Pacific Hotel tonight. Situated close to the Panmen scenic area in Suzhou, the hotel’s facilities include three restaurants, lounge bar, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre and spa (charges apply). Each of the 481 air-conditioned rooms has a television, telephone, safe, iron and ironing board, and minibar (charges apply). B, L

Day 10 Suzhou to Shanghai

See the Chinese Master of Nets Garden – the most exquisite and well-preserved residential garden in Suzhou – on an included visit. You will also visit a silk factory of Sozhou before travelling by road to Shanghai for two-night stay at the locally rated 4-star Jin Jiang Hotel. This locally well-respected hotel has been in operation for 70 years and is centrally located in the city. Facilities include a sauna, bowling alley, gymnasium and an indoor swimming pool, in addition to a variety of bars and restaurants offering a range of cuisine styles. All 442 bedrooms have a television, fridge, tea and coffee-making facilities, hairdryer and safe.

Perhaps join an optional excursion to see an acrobatic show this evening. B, L, D

Day 11 Shanghai sightseeing

Yu Garden

On an included tour, visit the famous Bund waterfront where you'll see a variety of architectural styles including Gothic, baroque and Renaissance, which is why the area's often dubbed the 'Museum of International Architecture'. You’ll also visit Yu Garden and Nanjing Road. This evening enjoy a night cruise on the Huangpu River and a farewell dinner. B, L, D

Day 12 Shanghai to UK

Flight home

Return to the UK, arriving in the evening for your included UK door-to-door travel service home. B

Important Visa Information

Chinese authorities now require fingerprints on visas so we can no longer supply them. If you are aged 70 or below you will need to have your fingerprints taken and pay for the visa, (currently £151) at the Chinese visa application centre in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. We will send you the application pack approximately 8 weeks before departure, with clear instructions of what you need to do, and how we can continue to help.
