Day 1 UK-Astana

The modern architecture of Astana

Fly overnight to Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital.


Day 2 Astana

The capital of Kazakhstan - Astana

Arrive in Astana and spend tonight at the locally rated 4-star Hotel Kaz Zhol. After checking in to the hotel you’ll be taken on a tour of the city’s modern side of dazzling skyscrapers – some designed by British architect Norman Foster – and cutting-edge government buildings. See the huge Hazrat Sultan Mosque and visit to the National Museum, which covers the history of Kazakhstan from ancient times to present day. B, L, D


Day 3 Astana-Bishkek

Kyrgyzstan

After breakfast, fly to Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan set against the backdrop of the Tien Shan mountains. Explore the city on an included tour and visit Osh Bazaar, one of the busiest markets in Bishkek. Check in for a two-night stay at the locally rated 4-star Ambassador Hotel. B, L, D

Day 5 Bishtek to Karakol

Check out after breakfast and begin your journey to Karakol – stopping on the way for an included lunch and visit to see the petroglyphs of Cholpon-Ata, ancient rock carvings depicting local wildlife and hunting scenes – some of which date from the Bronze Age. Spend the next two nights at the locally rated 4-star Green Yard Guest House. B, L, D


Day 6 Karakol

Fairy Tale Skazka Canyon, Kyrgyzstan

Tour the town of Karakol and see the Dungan Mosque, which resembles a Chinese Temple, and the distinctive Orthodox church built almost entirely from wood. After this you’ll drive to Barskoon Gorge, between the steep slopes of the valley and up to the top of the Cup of Manas waterfall. You’ll also visit Djety-Oguz Gorge where vast rocky outcrops rise above the forest and Skazka Canyon, otherwise known as Fairy Tale Canyon because of its unusual rock formations – which resemble anything from the Great Wall of China to a hippo! Day 7 Karakol-Bishkek-Almaty

After a scenic drive through Boom Gorge to Bishkek, fly to Almaty in Kazakhstan and spend the next two nights at the Ramada Almaty Hotel. B, L, D


Day 8 Charyn Canyon

Today you visit the gaping chasm of Charyn Canyon and descend into it for a walk between the sheer rocky walls. Thousands of years of weathering have left the canyon with a number of bizarre rock formations. B, L, D

Day 9 Almaty

Ascension Cathedral in Almaty

Explore Almaty’s Soviet-influenced old quarter and see the Ascension Cathedral, built entirely from wood without the use of a single nail, and visit the Kazakh Museum of Folk Musical Instruments. Then ride a funicular into the mountains to the alpine resort of Shymbulak, before returning to Almaty to visit the Central State Museum and the Grand Theatre. This evening you head to Kok-Tobe Park, the highest point in the city, for amazing views over Almaty. Catch the overnight train to Shymkent. B, L, D

Shymkent is one of Kazakhstan’s most modern and dynamic cities with a blend of Russian, Kazakh and Uzbek influences giving it a unique identity. During your tour you’ll see the archaeological museum and learn about the ancient traders and nomads whose paths led them through the city. Day 11 Otrar and Turkistan

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi

Pay a visit to the abandoned city of Otrar, once an important Silk Route stopover, and then see the great mausoleum and mosque of Arystan Bab. In the city of Turkistan you visit the stunning Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a revered Turkic poet and holy man. Ultimately unfinished, it’s a glorious picture of artful tile work, imposing masonry and bright turquoise domes. B, L, D

Day 12 Shymkent-Astana
