Day 1 UK-Johannesburg
Depart for your overnight flight to Johannesburg.
Day 2 Johannesburg
Transfer from the airport to your Johannesburg hotel where you stay overnight at the locally rated 4-star Maslow Hotel (4Q). D
Day 3 Pretoria
Transfer from your hotel to Pretoria railway station where you check in for the Shongololo Good Hope. Look forward to a full-day tour of Pretoria and Soweto before joining your train and departing for Nelspruit where you will stop overnight. B, D
Day 4 Nelspruit (for Drakensberg)
A full-day tour takes you into the district of Mpumalanga, stopping at God’s Window, a vantage point high up on the Drakensberg Escarpment, plus the rock formations of Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the ‘ghost village’ of Pilgrim’s Rest. Rejoin your train and continue to Malelane. B, D
Day 5 Malelane (for Kruger National Park)
Look forward to a full-day of game viewing in Kruger National Park, one of the biggest and oldest game parks in South Africa. Watch out for wildlife including the famous ‘big five’. Rejoin your train and stop overnight at Mpaka in Swaziland. B, D
Day 6 Mpaka (for Mbabane), Swaziland-Hluhluwe, South Africa
Visit Swazi Candles – a centre where you see displays of decorative candles, woodcarvings, textiles and the superb basketwork for which the Swazis are renowned, and Mantenga Cultural Village. Return to your train and travel to Hluhluwe in South Africa.
Day 7 Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park
Enjoy a game drive in one of the oldest game reserves in South Africa. Lookout for animals from rhino to wild dogs and the big five, as well as birds in this exciting park. Return to your train and continue to Empangeni. B, D
Day 8 Empangeni (for iSmangaliso Wetland Park)
This wetland park – formerly known as Greater St Lucia Wetlands – is a protected area and home to a large population of hippos and crocodiles, plus a wealth of plant and animal life. Discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site on boat cruise before returning to your train and departing for Durban. B, D
Day 9 Durban
Disembark for a Durban city tour, and a visit to the botanical gardens.
Afterwards, continue to uShaka Marine World (entrance fee not included) and then by train to Ladysmith. B, D
Day 10 Ladysmith
A battlefields tour reveals the history of the area.
You’ll visit the Siege Museum with its displays relating to the Siege of Ladysmith and the Anglo Boer War, plus Wagon Hill – the site of the battle in 1900. This afternoon, perhaps join a game drive or just relax.
Afterwards, your train departs for Bloemfontein. B, L, D
Day 11 Bloemfontein
Tour Bloemfontein, and learn about the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902 at the fascinating Anglo Boer Museum. Continue by train to Kimberley. B, D
Day 12 Kimberley
Visit the Kimberley Mining Museum, housing the world’s largest uncut diamond, an open-air museum, plus the ‘Big Hole’ – the world’s biggest hand-dug excavation, made in search of diamonds! Afterwards, visit the William Humphrey Art Gallery and the McGregor Museum. Depart for Graaff Reinet, travelling through the unique and beautiful scenery of the Karoo region. B, D
Day 13 On the train
Enjoy a day at leisure on board, enjoying all your meals on board. B, L, D
Day 14 Oudtshoorn
Visit an ostrich farm at Oudtshoorn, known as the ‘ostrich capital’. You’ll also visit the Cango Caves with their vast caverns and stalactite formations. Drive through the Outeniqua Pass to rejoin your train in George, with dinner at the Fancourt Golf Estate tonight. B, D
Day 15 George (for Knysna)
Drive to Knysna, a coastal town separated the Indian Ocean by a lagoon in a natural amphitheatre of hills, and visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve. Alternatively, enjoy some shopping in town. Rejoin your train and depart for Buffeljagsrivier. B, L, D
Day 16 Hermanus
A scenic drive takes you to Hermanus, a coastal village known for its whale-watching opportunities. Transfer to a wine estate in Worcester for a tasting before returning to your train for a farewell dinner. Depart for Cape Town. B, D
Day 17 Cape Towm
Arrive at Cape Town station and disembark.
Enjoy a tour of some of the city’s highlights, before transferring to the locally rated 5-star Table Bay Hotel (5Q) where you stay overnight. B
Day 18 - 19 Cape Town-UK
Transfer to Cape Town airport for your overnight flight to the UK. B
Shongololo – Good Hope Train
Experience South Africa from a different perspective as you travel aboard Shongolo’s Good Hope train, crossing the country from east to west. During your 18-night holiday, you’ll spend 14 nights on board your train – the perfect way to see this beautiful country. Look forward to dining in the period-style dining cars, enjoying a choice of cuisine and South African wines, relaxing in the bar car or modest smoking lounge, or watching the country pass by from the observation car and balcony. At the end of each day, the train will stop, allowing you relax and sleep peacefully in your ‘Gold’ category en suite double or twin cabin, equipped with tea and coffee-making facilities, a safe, and hairdryer. To complete your South African adventure, you’ll also spend two nights in hotels at the start and conclusion of your journey.
