Continue to the Blyde River Canyon, an amazing natural phenomenon that is 26 kilometres long and varies between six and 800 metres in depth. Here you view Bourke’s Luck Potholes, rock formations carved out by the whirlpools of the Blyde and Treur rivers. Your final stop is the former prospectors’ village of Pilgrim’s Rest, now a ghost town. It was founded in 1873 after gold and silver were discovered nearby, and has now been declared a National Monument. Many of the original buildings still survive, including a hotel, shops, a 1920s petrol station and the cemetery, with the grave of a robber caught stealing from the gold mine.
Optional on 9 nights itinerary
Orange groves, sugar cane plantations and misty mountain peaks are a feature of your journey through Swaziland, considered one of Africa’s most beautiful countries. This small, mountainous state is entirely landlocked and has an area of 17,000 square kilometres, with a population of 700,000. The entire country is smaller than Kruger National Park. You stop in Mbabane, the capital of this exotic kingdom. With a population of over 50,000, it is the largest town in Swaziland, and its pleasantly cool setting in the Elangeni Hills attracted many of its inhabitants here.
Optional on 9 nights itinerary
Post-holiday extension - Full board
After your main holiday, stay six nights at the friendly, 3-star Blue Marlin (3Q+), situated in the peaceful town of Scottburgh. Located 200 yards from a sandy beach, you can relax on the Indian Ocean shores or explore further afield, perhaps visiting Durban, the Oribi Gorge or Tala Game Reserve.
Mjejane River Lodge 4Q
Situated on the banks of Crocodile River, the 4-star Mjejane River Lodge (4Q) is in a peaceful, private location and makes the perfect base for spotting Africa’s indigenous animals and birds. Amenities at the lodge include a lobby lounge, outdoor pool, bar, restaurant and boma for alfresco dining.
There are just 17 rooms here overlooking the river and park, so you can look forward to attentive service and an intimate atmosphere. Each room has a furnished terrace, tea and coffee making facilities, a safe and hairdryer.
Your stay at the lodge is on a full-board basis and there's a free bar serving a selection of local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from 10am to 10pm daily. Meals are either served in the outdoor ‘boma’ dining area or in the restaurant.
With your included game drives you'll be heading out either very early in the morning or late in the afternoon to take advantage of the cooler parts of the day when the animals are most active, so you'll invariably find you go to bed quite early! During the evenings you can go stargazing – this part of the world has spectacularly clear night skies – listen to traditional Shangaan stories and perhaps enjoy after-dinner talks about Kruger and its wildlife.
Located about seven miles from the small settlement of Hectorspruit and 18 miles from Malelane, a small town with a few shops and medical facilities, the lodge overlooks the Crocodile River, beyond which lies Kruger National Park. Nelspruit airport is approximately one hour and 30 minutes away.
