Day 1 UK to Johannesburg


After taking your included VIP door-to-door travel service to the airport, fly overnight to Johannesburg in South Africa.

Day 2 Johannesburg to Bela Bela

Mabula Game Lodge

Transfer to the Mabula Game Lodge in Bela Bela (130 miles, two hours and 30 minutes), and enjoy the afternoon at leisure to settle in to your new surroundings. D

Day 3 Mabula Game Reserve

Rise early this morning for your first safari in the game reserve.

The varied landscapes of the reserve provide a habitat for an astounding selection of wildlife including 60 mammals, 300 bird species, and numerous plants, reptiles and insect species. Dusk and dawn are the optimal times for viewing wildlife, especially the ‘Big Five’. You’ll be led by expert guide and travel in open-air safari vehicles which offer great viewing opportunities.

This afternoon, look forward to a wildlife talk from a guide, followed by another safari drive. B, L, D

Day 4 Mabula Game Reserve

Embark on a lion tracking experience to learn more about the territories and behaviour of the king of the jungle this morning.

Lions are tracked using radio antenna and tracker collars, ensuring guaranteed viewing of the lions. Your guide will be on hand to help you learn about the pride structure, and conservation methods utilised in the park.

This afternoon, enjoy another safari drive through the game reserve, keeping your eyes peeled for resident animals, including hyena, cheetah, honeybadger and the charismatic warthog. B, L, D

Day 5 Mabula Game Reserve

This morning, look forwarded to a guided bush walk led by an experienced guide.

Look out for impala, zebra, giraffe and ostrich grazing on the vast open grassland plains.

You’ll have the afternoon to spend at leisure, perhaps take advantage of the lodge’s amenities and relax by to pool, or book a treatment in the spa. Look forward to a cocktail party by the pool this evening, with drinks and canapés. B, L, D

Day 6 Mabula Game Reserve

Head out for another safari drive before breakfast, where you might be lucky enough to spot elephants, hippo and a variety of antelope, such as eland and gemsbok.

The rest of the day is at leisure, before a star gazing experience this evening. Learn about the constellations of the night sky and the local myths and legends surrounding them. B, L, D

Day 7 Mabula Game Reserve

Take a guided walk around the game reserve and discover the local plants and their properties. Your guide specialises in local medicine and holistic cultures, and will identify plants and their healing properties, as well as focusing on the medicines that can be made.

This afternoon’s safari drive offers another chance to spot the ‘Big Five’. B, L, D

Enjoy another guided bush walk this morning. Your experienced guide is on hand to help you identify any of the reserve’s 300 bird species you may spot.

This afternoon offers the chance to spy more of the reserve’s wildlife on a safari drive. B, L, D

Day 9 Mabula Game Reserve to Johannesburg

Look forward to one final safari drive this morning, before transferring back to Johannesburg for your return overnight flight to the UK. B

Arrive in the UK for your included VIP door-to-door travel service home.

During your stay you’ll have the chance to learn about the award-winning conservation project to protect the ground hornbill within the reserve. These charismatic birds hold a local cultural importance, and are a flagship species for the savannah biome. Considered ‘vulnerable’ by the IUCN, less than 1,500 birds remain in South Africa, with their habitat threatened by farming. You’ll learn about the importance of conservation, and the methods used by the project team to ensure this iconic species is preserved.

Mabula Game Lodge (4Q)

Located in the Mabula Private Game Reserve, the 4-star lodge is set against the backdrop of the Waterberg Mountains and, thanks to the abundance of animal and birdlife, offers incredible wildlife spotting opportunities. Amenities at the thatched lodge include a swimming pool, spa offering treatments (extra charge), bar, terrace, gym, shop, tennis court and a boma for alfresco dining.

You’ll stay in comfortable thatched chalets and suites, all of which are air-conditioned and en-suite. The spacious rooms are decorated in a traditional African-style, using natural colours and materials throughout. All rooms feature a flat-screen television, telephone, hairdryer, safe, and tea and coffee-making facilities. Your stay is on an all-inclusive basis and the free bar serves a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks 11 hours a day. You can enjoy drinks and lunch on the terrace, or for a unique dining experience, enjoy a boma dinner under the African stars.

The Mabula Game Lodge is located in the Mabula Private Game Reserve, a 12,000 hectare reserve, home to over 300 bird species, 60 mammal species and an array of plant, reptile and insect species. The reserve is within the magnificent UNESCO-listed, malaria-free Waterberg Biosphere, an area steeped in history, with artefacts found here dating back to the Stone Age. Johannesburg airport is approximately a two-hour drive away.
