Day 2 Cairo

Sphinx and Pyramid of Khafre, Cairo, Egypt

An included city tour this morning reveals some of Cairo’s highlights, including the city’s fascinating Citadel, which was home to Egypt’s rulers for seven centuries after its creation in the 12th century. Today the site is home to numerous mosques and palaces that dominate the city’s skyline and illustrate how it has evolved throughout history.

You’ll return to your hotel in time for some lunch before this afternoon’s visit to Egypt’s icons – the Sphinx and the Pyramids. These landmarks have become synonymous with Egypt, and the history of their construction will mesmerise you as much as the sight of them. You’ll also visit the Khufu Ship, an ancient solar boat which was discovered in a pit in the Giza pyramid complex and carefully reconstructed. It is thought to be one of the largest, oldest and best preserved example of an Antiquity-age vessel, and this solar barge is believed to have been used as either a ritual vessel to carry the resurrected king across the heavens, or as a funeral barge to carry the embalmed king to Giza.
