Day 1 UK to Nuremberg

Nuremberg

Fly to Munich and transfer to Nuremberg, the historic Bavarian city, where you embark Amadeus Royal. Cruise towards Bamberg early this evening as you enjoy a welcome reception and dinner on board.

Nuremberg Bavaria Germany Europe

Day 2 Bamberg

Picturesque Bamberg

Today you pass into the Main through the Main-Danube Canal, the idea for which  originated in 793AD with Charlemagne, although the canal wasn’t finally completed until 1992! This vast civil engineering project includes no fewer than 16 locks. Your ship moors in Bamberg, renowned as one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany. An included walking tour of the old city, nestled beneath the stunning Michaelsberg Monastery, will reveal its cobbled streets and quaint thoroughfares lined with interesting buildings, timber-framed houses and historic museums, all remarkably untouched by World War II. Visit the cathedral, a fine representation of the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture, and walk through the historic streets to discover the old Town Hall, magnificent Renaissance building of Alte Hofhaltung and the quaint fisherman’s houses of ‘Little Venice’. Depart Bamberg early this evening.

Day 3 Würzburg

The Residenz Palace in Wurzburg

Arrive in Würzburg, set among vineyards on the banks of the River Main, for the afternoon. It was an important city in the Middle Ages, but owes its present appearance to the prince-bishops of the Schönborn family, who erected a large number of wonderful baroque buildings in the 17th and 18th centuries. Enjoy an included guided tour of one of Europe’s most splendid baroque palaces, the Residenz, which dates back to the early 18th century and features frescoes by Tiepolo. You’ll then continue into the picturesque Bavarian town to see the 13th-century Fortress of Marienberg, the cathedral and old Main Bridge. Amadeus Royal leaves early this evening to start cruising up the River Main, continuing overnight towards Miltenberg.

Day 4 Miltenberg

The charming town of Miltenberg

Spend a leisurely morning on board as you cruise to Miltenberg, set in the attractive Main valley, between the Odenwald and the Spessart. Arrive at lunchtime and spend the afternoon exploring. The oldest part of the city lies on the left bank of the Main below a steep wooded hill, crowned by a 13th-century castle. The old town, enclosed within ancient walls and gates, is home to charming streets of half-timbered houses and old wine taverns which you'll no doubt discover this afternoon as you explore independently. If beer is more you thing, however, why not join an optional tour of the local brewery. Sail north along the Main towards Rüdesheim.

Day 5 Rüdesheim to Koblenz

Lorelei Rock

Early this morning you pass through Frankfurt, with its numerous bridges, and Mainz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Main rivers. From Mainz your ship joins the River Rhine for the next section of the journey, arriving in Rüdesheim later this morning. Explore this charming old wine town, which is famed for its cobblestone Drosselgasse, full of restaurants, wine houses and garden taverns. Perhaps join an optional wine tasting or an excursion to Siegfried's Museum of Mechanical Music where you can see all kinds of 'self-playing' music machines, from barrel organs and music boxes to horn gramophones.. Amadeus Royal leaves Rüdesheim during lunch, sailing along probably the most famous and scenic stretch of the Rhine Valley. You pass Pfalz bei Kaub, a tower on an island in the centre of the river, where once a toll was levied on passing ships. Soon afterwards, the ship rounds the 132-metre Lorelei Rock, the inspiration for a famous poem by Heinrich Heine, set to music by Friederich Silcher. The Lorelei was a siren who is said to have sat on the rock combing her hair and singing, thus luring sailors to their watery deaths on the submerged rocks. Your ship moors in Koblenz later this afternoon and you'll have a few hours to explore. The city is situated at the point where the Rhine meets the Moselle and it's one of Germany's oldest towns with a history spanning 2,000 years. Discover the attractive riverside promenade and several historic churches, all set beneath the Festung Ehrenbreitstein citadel on top of the hill. Later tonight, Amadeus Royal will cruise towards Cologne.

Rüdesheim Rhineland-Palatinate Rhineland Germany Europe

Day 6 Cologne

An aerial view of Cologne

Continue north along the Rhine, passing Bonn, capital of West Germany from 1949 until April 19, 1999 when Berlin was restored as capital of the reunified country. You reach Cologne in the early hours, where the ship moors within easy reach of the city centre. Founded by the Romans, Cologne has long been an important trading centre. Whilst here, you may like to discover the city's interesting history at the Roman Germanic Museum, or admire the impressive Gothic cathedral. Building started in 1248 to house the relics of the three Magi but was not finally completed until 1880! You can see the magnificent shrine to Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – now among the patron saints of Cologne – behind the high altar. You set sail at lunchtime and cruise north overnight past the busy industrial centres of Düsseldorf, Duisburg and Essen.

Cologne North Rhine-Westphalia Rhineland Germany Europe

Day 7 Amsterdam

Montelbaanstoren tower in Amsterdam

Early this morning you cross the Dutch border, passing the city of Nijmegen, and taking the Amsterdam Rijnkanaal north through the flat polder landscape of South Holland to Amsterdam. You arrive in Amsterdam and remain moored here for the rest of the day. Enjoy an included excursion which highlights the vivid history of the city and includes a canal cruise to view such treasures as the famous Skinny Bridge, the Montelbaanstoren tower and the Jewish Quarter, where Anne Frank’s house can be seen. A fascinating coach tour will reveal the city’s most famous sights further afield. Look forward to a farewell dinner on board this evening.
