Day 1 UK to Berlin to Potsdam

Fly to Berlin and transfer to Potsdam where you embark MS Johannes Brahms. Enjoy a welcome drinks reception and dinner on board as your ship remains moored here overnight.

Potsdam Brandenburg Germany Europe

Day 2 Potsdam to Brandenburg

Brandenburg

Depart Potsdam before breakfast, and cruise to Brandenburg, arriving late-morning. Perhaps join an optional walking tour of the city. The Dominsel – Cathedral Island – is the historic heart of the town and home to the Cathedral, which began construction in 1165 but was completed as a Gothic cathedral in the 14th century. Inside, the 300-year-old Wagner organ is one of the most famous baroque organs in Germany. Other highlights include St Catherine's Church, built in 1401 and the Altstädtisches Rathaus (Old Town Hall). In front of it stands a huge sandstone statue of the knight Roland, erected in 1474 as a symbol of the town's independence. Depart here early evening and head to your nearby overnight mooring.

Day 3 Magdeburg

Magdeburg Cathedral

Spend the morning cruising to Magdeburg, arriving at lunchtime. Perhaps explore the city on an optional walking tour. Depart Magdeburg later this afternoon and cruise overnight to Wittenberg.

Magdeburg Saxony-Anhalt Germany Europe

Day 4 Wittenberg

Wittenberg

Arrive in Wittenberg after breakfast. Go exploring in the historic home town of the preacher Martin Luther and where, so the story goes, he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church, setting in motion the Protestant Reformation. 2017 marked 500 years since the event. Learn more on an optional guided walk which visits the former monastery where Luther lived and the vast UNESCO-listed Market Square, which has bronze statues of Luther and of his contemporary, Philipp Melanchthon – a great linguist and theologian. MS Johannes Brahms departs at lunchtime and cruises overnight to Meissen.

Wittenberg Saxony-Anhalt Germany Europe

Day 5 Meissen to Dresden

Meissen

Your ship arrives in Meissen after breakfast. An optional tour reveals the world-famous Meissen porcelain factory. Europe’s first white porcelain was produced in Dresden in 1708 meaning it no longer had to be imported from China at great expense. But in 1710 the factory was moved to Meissen, where it was easier to protect the secret processes, which you can learn more about on an optional excursion. Otherwise, explore the town independently to admire a castle straight out of a fairy tale, an historic cathedral, and glorious views over the Elbe Valley. Depart after lunch for Dresden, arriving early evening and mooring overnight.

Dresden Saxony Germany Europe

Day 6 Dresden to Bad Schandau

Dresden

This morning you can discover the restored city of Dresden, either independently or on an optional city tour. It is a beautiful city that has been rebuilt in spectacular fashion after the destruction of World War II. An optional tour will reveal the Zwinger Palace and the Semper Opera House. The Frauenkirche is another well-known Dresden landmark. The church was famously left as a pile of rubble around a roofless, empty shell as a symbol of the city’s suffering. But in 1990 a massive reconstruction project started and the church opened once again, complete with its iconic bell-shaped dome, in 2005. Alternatively, you might prefer to join an optional tour into the Saxon Switzerland National Park to see the stunning Elbe Sandstone Mountains. These unusual wind-eroded rock formations are on the border between Germany and the Czech Republic. Popular with climbers and hikers the park’s most popular spot is the Bastei rocks. Here you can walk across a bridge that is part of the old fortifications, running between them, providing amazing views and photo opportunities. Your ship continues to Bad Schandau, or a nearby mooring, after lunch where excursion participants will rejoin her, then cruises overnight towards Decin.

Day 7 Decin to Prague

Prague

Disembark MS Johannes Brahms after breakfast and transfer to Prague. Stay for two nights on a bed-and-breakfast basis at the locally rated 5-star Corinthia Hotel (4Q), with dinner included tonight. The hotel is just two metro stops from Prague's historic city centre and a short walk from its oldest castle – the 10th century Vysehrad. There's a metro station opposite the hotel. Facilities at the hotel include three restaurants, two bars and there is a swimming pool on the 26th floor with stunning panoramic views over Prague. There are 539 rooms, each with a television, telephone, minibar and tea and coffee-making facilities. With a history dating back more than a millennium, an endless labyrinth of quirky side streets, a tapestry of different architectural styles, and quite possibly the best beer in the world, Prague is a Bohemian treasure-trove! Discover more on an included city tour this afternoon. Highlights include the Old Town Square, where the astronomical clock will intrigue you with its symbolism, and the Church of St Nicholas which has eye-catching frescoes.

Day 8 Prague

Prague Tyn Cathedral and Clock Tower

Today you can explore the city at your leisure – perhaps revisit sights from yesterday for a closer, longer look or peruse the galleries in search of the city's surrealist and cubist gems. Perhaps look out for somewhere to eat out tonight. Alternatively, join an optional trip to Prague Castle this afternoon. This spectacular, fairy-tale-like fortress complex occupies more space than seven football fields, and encloses within its walls a wealth of historic palaces and churches, including the massive Gothic St Vitus cathedral that dominates the city skyline.
