Visit a Soviet ghost town
Catch a glimpse of Soviet-era life on a guided boat trip to the ghost town of Pyramiden. This former Soviet mining town had a population of more than a 1,000 living in these challenging arctic conditions during the 1980’s. Completely abandoned in 1998, the town remains as it was left, with old mining equipment on street corners and dusty museum exhibits still on display. During your tour, you’ll venture inside some of the deserted buildings, an eerie yet fascinating experience!
Catch a king crab for lunch
Join a culinary adventure in search of the monstrous king crab, a relatively new arrival in Norwegian waters, but considered a delicious delicacy. Board a RIB and head through the waters of the Sarnesfjorden to check the traps and learn about the introduction of the species to Norwegian waters, before returning to basecamp where your freshly caught lunch will be prepared by your host.
The Trondenes Peninsula
From Harstad, embark on a journey from Viking times, through the medieval period and World War II to the present day on an excursion to the Trondenes Historical Centre. The multi-media experience details the exciting history of northern Norway and offers an insight into the modern local life. Complete your tour with a visit to the Adolf Gun, one of ten huge guns that were used as coastal defence artillery by Nazi Germany during World War II, and to the world’s most northerly medieval building, Trondenes Church.
