Breathtaking fjords, beautiful scenery and charming towns await you

Set sail for Norway via Lerwick, capital of the Shetland Islands. Your next port of call is beautiful Bergen with its colourful and historic Bryggen – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some 62 wooden buildings, a reminder of the town’s past as part of the Hanseatic League. After visiting pretty Olden, famed as the starting point for the Oldedalen Valley with its waterfalls and glaciers including the famous Briksdal, cruise the Nordfjord with its stunning backdrop of cliffs, mountains and green valleys. You’ll also continue by Hornelin with its towering sea cliffs before visiting Flam, home of the Flamsbana railway that wends it way to the mountains of Myrdal and has been considered one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys. Your final cruising will take you through Naeroyfjord – part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Western Norwegian Fjords, by virtue of its scale and magnificence in terms of its length, depth and stunning fjordland landscapes.

Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, which in turn comprise some 100 islands and islets. Shetland has a rich Viking heritage with a distinct dialect and culture, the windswept archipelago providing a haven for birds. Around a third of the population of Shetland live in Lerwick which is home to the Shetland Museum with exhibits relating to geology, local industry and history, archaeology and more. Perhaps enjoy browsing the shops in Commerical Street or visit the Bod of Gremista – an 18th century fishing station which has been restored and now houses the Shetland Textile Working Museum.

The Hanseatic city of Bergen has many attractions, including the Fish Market and Bryggen Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose 62 colourful timber buildings facing the harbour were once the preserve of Hanseatic merchants. Here you’ll also find narrow streets and cobbled stairways leading to the waterfront. Bergen was also the birthplace of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, whose home Troldhaugen lies not far from the city. For impressive views of the city and beyond perhaps take the funicular to the peak of Mount Fløyen.

The charming village of Olden is set amongst beautiful scenery at the eastern end of Nordfjord where the fjord divides into separate arms. Within the village you will find an 18th century church as well as the former home of the founder of Singer sewing machines. Beyond lies the beautiful Oldedalen Valley with its waterfalls and glaciers including the Briksdal Glacier, which you may wish to visit while here.

Take a stroll along the waterside, past orchards and hamlets, cottages and farmland in scenic village of Flåm, situated on the banks of the Aurlandsfjord. Perhaps treat yourself to a ride aboard the Flåm Railway to see the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall which tumbles down the mountainside.
