Alesund is the largest town on the northwest coast of Norway, built on three islands and with a backdrop of impressive mountain peaks. The town centre was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1904 and today is known for its Art Nouveau style architecture. In addition to the National Art Noveau Centre, the city is also home to galleries, shops and cafes. Alternatively, perhaps head up to the Mount Aksla viewpoint where, weather permitting, you can appreciate impressive views over the city, surrounding islands and fjords.

Torghatten Mountain

Cruise the waters around the charming island village of Rorvik, situated to the east of the Vikna archipelago in the county of Trondelag. From here, cruise along the shores of Torget Island, home to Torghatten Mountain famous for the small hole that lies at its heart. Afterwards, cruise past the Seven Sisters mountain range – a chain of seven mountains which legend has it were once trolls turned to stone! Late today cross the Arctic Circle as you head for the land of the midnight sun.

Okshornan Mountain

Cruise along the northwest coast of Senja Island, the second largest of Norway’s islands within the Arctic Circle. Watch for the Okshornan Mountains, sometimes known as the ‘Devil’s Teeth’ due to their jagged outline.

Dubbed the 'top of Europe', Honningsvåg is encompassed by rugged mountains and the Arctic Ocean and is the gateway to Europe’s most northerly point – the North Cape. Within the town which was rebuilt after World War Two, you’ll find the North Cape Museum with information about the region, as well as an Ice Bar created completely from ice, while the North Cape itself offers an extraordinary landscape where you may be fortunate to see the Northern Lights, as well as the North Cape Hall visitor centre.

Be greeted this morning by the breathtaking Arctic wilderness of Longyearbyen. Situated in the Svalbard archipelago at the end of the Advent Fjord, the town was established in 1906 to mine coal reserves. One of the mines is now a museum where you can learn about the life of those who worked here, as well as the local area. Nearby also lies the North Pole Expedition Museum focusing on the role of airships in polar expeditions. Beyond lies the Longyear Valley, accessible via a husky buggy ride. Late this afternoon and into the night, cruise through Tempelfjorden, sailing past the 16-mile long Nordenskioldbreen glacier.

Once a busy Russian mining town, Pyramiden is now an uninhabited ‘ghost town’. Evidence of its former existence can be seen in the now abandoned buildings that remain, including warehouses, accommodation and power plant.

Known as the ‘Gateway to the Arctic’, Tromso is a great location from which to watch for the elusive Northern Lights. It is slo home to the famous iceberg-shaped Arctic Cathedral, as well as museums, galleries, an Arctic aquarium and more. Perhaps take the cable car to the top of Storsteinen Mountain to enjoy one of the best views of the surrounding landscape and city.

Northerly Bodø has a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains and distant islands and is also home to the Saltstraumen malestrom – one of the world’s strongest tidal currents. It’s well placed for spotting sea eagles, or watching the midnight sun from Mount Ronvikfjellet. The town is home to a cathedral as well as an Aviation Museum, and a good selection of shops.

Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, which in turn comprise some 100 islands and islets. Shetland has a rich Viking heritage with a distinct dialect and culture, the windswept archipelago providing a haven for birds. Around a third of the population of Shetland live in Lerwick which is home to the Shetland Museum with exhibits relating to geology, local industry and history, archaeology and more. Perhaps enjoy browsing the shops in Commerical Street or visit the Bod of Gremista – an 18th century fishing station which has been restored and now houses the Shetland Textile Working Museum.
