Feel the excitement built on board ship as Iceland drifts into view. Your first taste of the remote island nation will be pint-sized Eskifjördur which is dwarfed by two mountains. Take in the brightly coloured houses and the dramatic views across the water to the 3,200-foot-tall mountain of Hólmatindur. Little more than a village, Eskifjördur developed into a trading centre in the late 18th century and thrived with the growth of the herring industry in the 19th century. You might like to visit the Maritime Museum, the Mariners Lodge and perhaps even try some of the local dried fish.
