Monaco ⚓
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Join the rich and famous and make a spectacular entrance into the unofficial international capital of luxury. Monaco is the second smallest independent state in the world – after the Vatican – and the planet’s most densely populated independent Principality. There are four distinct areas within Monaco, including the medieval village of Monaco-Ville where you can visit the Place du Palais for the traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony, which is performed by the Prince’s Carabiniers just before midday. The Palace offers a breathtaking panoramic view overlooking the Port and the Monte-Carlo district and also reflects the history not only of Monaco, but of the Grimaldi family which has ruled from the palace for more than 720 years.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries the glamour and decadence of Monte Carlo and the French Riviera crossed over into real life when American film star Grace Kelly became chatelaine of the palace in 1956 on her marriage to Prince Rainier – which is the focus of an excursion this afternoon. Perhaps take the opportunity to visit the renowned Grand Casino of Monte Carlo during your time here or pay a visit to Monaco Cathedral, built in 1875 on the site of an earlier 13th-century church, where the remains of Prince Ranier III and Princess Grace are buried. For those enjoying life in the fast lane, you can even walk some of the world-famous Grand Prix circuit.
