A destination teeming with wildlife and history
Cruise through the breathtaking scenery of the world’s biggest island.
Join this voyage of discovery to uncover the unique landscapes, fascinating culture and incredible wildlife of Greenland. Spirit of Discovery will approach the island via the spectacular Prince Christian Sound, a narrow waterway which separates the mainland from Sammisoq and the other islands of the Cape Farewell archipelago. The dramatic vision of glaciers stretching into the sea, cascading waterfalls and tiny remote villages clinging to the surrounding mountains provides an awe-inspiring welcome to this inconceivable country. Look forward to visiting Nuuk, the island’s largest city and gastronomic hotspot. Perhaps pay a visit to the local museum, located in the beautiful old harbour, to learn about the country’s past.
This scenic cruise begins by unveiling the ancient sites of the Orkney Islands before introducing Iceland with visits to the tiny capital of Reykjavik and the little town of Isafjördur, both of which offer a gateway to the island’s natural wonders, such as the magical Blue Lagoon Spa and spectacular Gulfoss Waterfall. Once in Greenland a host of thrilling experiences awaits you, from visiting the home of a Greenlandic family and taking a boat trip through the blue tinted icebergs of an ice fjord, to a helicopter flight over the ice fields and even the opportunity to walk on a glacier.
Your four sightseeing tours will be in
- Kirkwall, Orkney
- Reykjavik, Iceland
- Nuuk, Greenland
- Belfast, Ireland

Nuuk, Greenland
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
This morning Spirit of Discovery will cruise into the capital of Greenland, where almost a third of the country’s population live. The tiny city is very compact, yet there are enough shops and street art to satisfy the urban explorer's appetite. Imaneq Street is the go-to destination for local handicrafts. Among the sights to seek out are Hans Egede's House, built in 1721 by the Dano-Norwegian Missionary who settled in the area. It’s the oldest building in Greenland, standing in a historic neighbourhood close to the harbour, and is now used for government receptions. Also seek out the distinctively painted Nuuk Cathedral, built in 1849 with an imposing clock tower and steeple added in 1884. You’ll see some of these attractions during your included sightseeing tour.
Other landmarks include the Hans Egede Church and a statue of the man himself plus the Greenland National Museum boasting numerous artefacts and exhibits including the mummified remains, preserved in ice and stone, of four 500-year-old bodies which were discovered in Qilakitsoq in the 1970s.

Narsarsuaq, Greenland
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
The tiny settlement of Narsarsuaq has under 200 residents yet features an airport, which was originally built during World War II by the Americans under the name Blue West One. Thousands of planes stopped to refuel on their way from the US to Europe while a 600-bed hospital was built to handle casualties from the Normandy landings. It remained a hospital site during the Korean War, when it was expanded to 1,000 beds, however it was eventually deemed surplus to requirements and closed. The hospital was destroyed by a fire in 1972, although the ruins remain.
Near the airport is the unique Greenlandic Arboretum – a botanical garden of the Arctic which is home to more than 100 species and 50,000 trees. The surrounding hills are scattered with 10th to 15th-century Norse ruins. Narsarsuaq also offers a gateway to the Qooroq ice fjord where you can see blue tinted icebergs that have formed over thousands of years. The incredible silence here is broken by the occasional sound of cracking ice.
