Celebrated landscapes, glorious climate, charming towns and villages… The Canary Islands have all this and more…
This scattering of islands in the Atlantic Ocean are a perennially popular pick with sun-seekers, nature lovers and history buffs. The unique environmental conditions and geographical location of the archipelago means it is also the perfect destination for stargazing, with the clearest skies in Europe. After calling in Cádiz, from where you could venture inland to the bijou city of Seville, begin your exploration of the Canary Islands. Discover the volcanic vistas and white-sand beaches of Lanzarote, soak up the eclectic vibe of Gran Canaria’s capital, then sail to the less visited island of Fuerteventura. Here, you can explore the wild and rugged landscape of volcanoes and sand dunes on a thrilling four-wheel drive tour.
Sample seafood and sangria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, before sightseeing in the old town of Santa Cruz de La Palma – the impressive colonial architecture is not to be missed! Complete your cruise with a day on the ‘Garden Island’ of Madeira, a favoured destination of Winston Churchill. Navigate the island’s verdant interior on a levada walk, or ride the cable car to the hillside suburb of Monte, and then, if you’re feeling brave, take an exhilarating toboggan ride back down.

Cadiz, Spain
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Believed to be the oldest settlement on the Iberian Peninsula, the Andalusian port of Cádiz was founded over 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians. Cádiz is divided into two areas, and the spacious avenues and modern buildings of the new district contrast well with the authentic, well preserved landmarks, the flat-roofed Moorish-style houses, and the narrow twisting alleys of the old.
After an included guided tour, take a refreshing stroll along the promenade or seek out the Baroque cathedral, neoclassical and Gothic-influenced town hall or Torre Tavira, one of over a hundred watchtowers that once guarded the city. You’ll have the chance to enjoy a tipple of the local sherry and enjoy an equestrian performance on an excursion or you could choose to head to nearby Seville to see the mighty Alcazar and cathedral.

04/04/2022 Arrecife, Lanzarote
Arrecife, Lanzarote
Arrive 0800. Depart 2000.
The dark volcanic rock and pristine beaches combined with the arid landscape give Lanzarote a haunting beauty, and the capital, laid-back Arrecife, unfurls in a line of low-rise buildings along the island’s east coast. Admire the attractive modern seafront, pretty beaches and colourful gardens basking in the perennial sunshine. Perhaps see more of the unusual terrain on a trek up the incredible Cuervo Volcano, before venturing into La Geria wine country where you can relax and enjoy a wine tasting. You could also tour the former home and gallery of the island's most famous artist at the César Manrique Foundation.

05/04/2022 Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
Arrive 0800. Depart 2100.
Las Palmas is primarily known for its golden-sand beaches and year-round sunshine. The island has a huge range of ecosystems and microclimates, including the UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve in the west, and the incredible 404-hectare Maspalomas dunes in the south. The historic capital is Las Palmas, and in its fashionable old quarter, Vegueta, you can admire classically designed buildings in a range of styles including late-Gothic and renaissance.
Look forward to an included sightseeing tour. If you’re feeling energetic, perhaps join a stand-up paddle boarding class, or hike the spectacular Bandama Crater, one of the youngest volcanoes in the Canarian archipelago.

06/04/2022 Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura
Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura
Arrive 0800. Depart 2000.
Fuerteventura is an island of vast plains and gentle valleys, boasting seemingly endless beaches and an excellent choice of water sports. The unassuming capital of Puerto del Rosario has a quaint harbour area of tangled lanes, traditional Canarian houses and a small promenade. Take time to wander the streets and take in some of the brightly coloured murals which have popped up around the city in recent years as part of a programme of civic improvement. Enjoy the sleepy pace here or join a trip to an aloe vera farm to discover more about this strange, hardy member of the lily family.

07/04/2022 Santa Cruz, Tenerife
Santa Cruz, Tenerife
Arrive 0800. Depart 2300.
With a full day in the largest and most populous of the Canaries, you’ll have ample time to seek out the capital’s cosmopolitan charms. After your included tour, perhaps see the cannon responsible for Admiral Nelson losing his arm on display in the Museo Militar, or explore the Jardin Botanico which was founded by Charles III of Spain in 1788 and the Orchid Gardens of Sitro Litre.
Outside of the capital, Mount Teide volcano, Spain’s highest peak, offers the chance to hike amid dramatic scenery, and the waters surrounding the island give you the chance to see whales and other marine life on a leisurely catamaran trip. After the sun sets, as you sail away from the island, turn your eyes to the skies to witness the celestial beauty over Tenerife. Thanks to the lack of light pollution, the island is one of the best locations in the world for star gazing.

08/04/2022 Santa Cruz, La Palma
Santa Cruz, La Palma
Arrive 0800. Depart 1700.
Said to be the greenest in the archipelago, the entire island of La Palma is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. From the fertile orchards and verdant forests of the north, to the dramatic black wilderness of the south, the island offers a wealth of contrasting landscapes, while its capital, Santa Cruz, sits in an amphitheatre on the slope of a volcanic crater. An included tour offers the perfect introduction.
Then, peep behind the capital’s modern facade to uncover a charming old quarter of historic Canarian mansions decorated with fanciful latticework balconies. You could also take the chance to explore the island by electric bike or head underground to discover the wonders of subterranean La Palma on a cave tour.

09/04/2022 Funchal, Madeira
Funchal, Madeira
Arrive 1000. Depart 1700.
Enjoy one of the most memorable approaches as you sail into Funchal, the capital of Madeira. This tiny outpost of Portugal is a living botanical garden, with the island’s rich volcanic soils supporting a wide variety of flora and fauna and vineyards. Set around a grand bay, Funchal offers elegant squares, a striking cathedral, subtropical gardens and broad avenues for you to discover.
An included panoramic tour reveals the island’s charms. Outdoor lovers are sure to enjoy a trip into the mountains beyond on a levada walk which will follow man-made water channels through lush forests that give way to panoramic views. For a more relaxed approach to exploring you could join a tour that ascends Pico do Arieiro to reveal fabulous views, stops at the pretty village of Santa da Serra and concludes with a tasting of the island’s most famous export Madeira wine.

Funchal’s fabulous Farmers’ Market
Known locally as Mercado dos Lavradores, this vibrant, indoor market sells a variety of fresh produce, and is a popular venue for local shoppers. Housed within an art deco building adorned with hand-painted tiles, flowers dominate the entrance, and to the rear you’ll find the fish market, bustling with fish merchants gutting and filleting the previous night’s catch of black scabbardfish.
Sand dunes of Corralejo
A 20-minute drive from Puerto del Rosario takes you to Corralejo Natural Park, home to the largest sand dunes in the Canary Islands. Stretching for 10 kilometres, the dunes are lapped by turquoise sea and host an array of protected plant and animal species. Contrary to popular belief, the sand here was not blown over from the Sahara, but is composed of the disintegrated shells of marine creatures.
Telescopes and tapas
Take a tour of the world’s largest solar observatory, located atop Tenerife’s imposing Mount Teide. After taking a peek through one of the telescopes to see how they work, taste traditional tapas at a local restaurant, offering incredible views of the mountain. Complete your tour with an exhilarating cable-car ride up to the mountain’s 12,198-foot summit where breathtaking panoramic views of sprawling mountains await you.
