Kirkwall is the capital of the Orkney Islands and home to the stately 12th century St Magnus Cathedral, built when the islands were under Viking rule. Within the town you can also find the remains of the 12th century Bishops Palace and the later Earl’s Palace, as well as the Orkney Museum tracing the islands’ history. Orkney is also known for its independent shops and galleries reflecting the creative activity of the islands. Further afield lie ancient standing stones and the archaeological site of Skara Brae, an outstanding Stone Age settlement and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney.

The port of Tobermory is the principal town on the Isle of Mull, built as a fishing port in the late 18th century and characterised by its brightly-painted houses that curve around the natural harbour. The Isle of Mull lies within the Inner Hebrides on Scotland’s west coast and its unspoilt beauty ranges from impressive sea cliffs and beaches, to mountains and forests, while to the south of Mull lies the small island of Iona, known for its association with St Columba.
