After an included sightseeing tour, you may like to seek out some of Helsinki’s other highlights such as the neo-Classical Senate Square, Market Hall and the Rock Church which is hewn from solid rock and crowned with a copper ceiling.

Then there’s the city’s secretive Cold War history which you can uncover at the KGB Museum on the 23rd floor of the Soviet era Hotel Viru.
Perhaps venture outside the old city limits to visit Kadriorg Park, which was founded by Peter the Great and is the setting for the baroque palace he dedicated to his wife, Catherine. Daredevils might enjoy an optional excursion to the 22nd floor of the TV Tower to walk along the edge of the roof – in a harness – for stupendous views.

Skagen is known for its remarkable light which attracted and inspired the Skagen colony of artists that flourished here from 1870 until the 1930s, and whose work captured the area’s stunning light and ‘plein air’ feel.
Discover the work and world of the art colony at the Skagen Kunstmuseer with works by artists including Karl Madsen, Peder Kroyer, Viggo Johansen, as well as the Drachmanns Hus and Anchers Hus, the latter both homes of artists. Skagen can offer more than just art, however. Perhaps stroll the main street taking in shops or sampling one of the town’s cafes, visit the Teddy Bear Museum, or the Kystmuseet – an open air museum not far from the harbour which traces the town’s fishing tradition, or just admire the sea and the luminescent light as you stroll the pale sands of Skagen’s beach.

Oslo was established in the 11th century and with its location at the head of the Oslofjord quickly became a major trading port. Today the city lives and breathes art and design, from the solidity of the medieval Akershus fortress to the iceberg-like Opera House that seems to be sliding into the city’s fjord. An overnight stay in port ensure plenty of time to take in the city’s multitude of attractions, and an included sightseeing tour is the perfect way to get your bearings.
Treat yourself to a fun ride at the TusenFryd Amusement Park, stroll along Aker Brygge wharf with its shops, restaurants and waterfront, or seek out some of Oslo’s state-of-the-art architecture. A must visit is the collection of Edvard Munch’s work in the National Museum and Munch Museum and the temple of architecture and design that is DogA.

The Fortress of Finland
Suomenlinna, meaning ‘fortress of Finland’, is a star-shaped defensive structure, built in the 18th century across a cluster of islands off the coast of Helsinki. The UNESCO-listed site features centuries-old artillery, bunkers and defensive walls. Walking trails link the popular sights, such as the King’s Gate drawbridge and Suomenlinna Museum. You can also explore a restored World War II submarine. This fascinating fortress is easily reached by ferry from the quay at Kauppatori.
Oslo’s trio of Maritime Museums
Intrepid explorers have been travelling into the unknown from Norway since the Viking Age, and you can learn more about the country’s world famous explorers by visiting some of the city’s fascinating maritime museums. The Fram and the Kon-Tiki museums document the travels of Fridtjof Nansen, Otto Sverdrup and Roald Amundsen, and house the original wooden vessels used on their polar expeditions. While in the Viking Ship Museum you can see original Viking long boats used both at sea and also in funeral rites.
Hans Christian Andersen’s Copenhagen
Famous author, Hans Christian Andersen spent most of his life in Copenhagen and was inspired to write some of his earliest fairy tales while living in Nyhavn. The city’s most famous statue, the Little Mermaid by Edvard Eriksen, is based on a character from one of the Danish author’s famous stories and you can learn more about Andersen’s life and work at the Fairy-Tale House Museum. Perhaps head to the King’s Garden to see a statue of the well-known author.
