24th January, 2022

Welcoming Captain Colm Ryan

As the most recent hire to the position of Captain, I must introduce myself. My name is Colm Ryan, I am from Cork in Ireland but more recently moved to Nova Scotia, Canada. My career at sea is now in its 30th year, and over that time I have seen most of the world including amazing out of the way places rarely seen by outsiders. I hope that my experience in sailing the planet will benefit Saga as we bring a most unique cruising experience to our guests.

I joined Spirit of Adventure on January 5th, 2022 and understudied Captain Franko Papic, learning the ways of the company, meeting guests and, importantly, getting used to the feel of the vessel as I piloted the ship in and out of our ports. On January 20th I assumed command, right in the middle of a very busy turnaround in Southampton. We were visited by Her Majesty’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) who came to audit our compliance with our company’s policies. They began their audit at 9am and finished just as our gangway was scheduled to be taken onboard at 8:30pm.

After we left Southampton, we had a very nice first day at sea (Jan 21st), but the early morning of the 22nd saw us experiencing the Bay of Biscay and the weather famously associated with that body of water. However, we were soon in the lee of the Spanish/ Portuguese coasts and able to comfortably sail all the way to Cadiz. It has been a wonderful couple of days at sea, especially as I have been able to get out and about and meet more and more of our guests. It’s very uplifting to see the ship carrying guests who are healthy, happy and enjoying the luxuries Spirit of Adventure provides.

Kind Regards
Captain Colm Ryan
