Grundarfjordur

Saga Sapphire blog - Captains' blogs

29th July, 2019

A delightfully quiet, serene and sunny morning dawned very early on Monday as we progressed into the little fjord named Grundar. Unfortunately, the harbour here is fairly small as it really is a fishing village, which meant we had to anchor just outside. Fortunately, the water is quite deep leading up to the breakwater and so we were able to anchor nice and close, meaning only a 5 minute tender taxi ride for guests to head ashore.

Visionary 19th-century novelist Jules Verne was so inspired by the spectacular volcanic terrain of this, the Snaefellsness (‘Snow Mountain’) Peninsula, that he set his epic tale ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ in the glacier in its heart. Remarkable rock formations, wild birds and rare plants growing amongst lava fields are some of the fascinations one will encounter whilst adventuring in this region.

Today, our tour trips were entitled so attractively so that it must have been difficult for guests to choose one or another: Puffin Paradise, Mystical Charm of Snaefellness, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Viking Sushi Adventure and Coastal Kayaking Experience were just some of the options on offer.

The weather remained almost perfect all day: calm with mostly clear skies and very summery temperatures for Iceland - in the mid-teens Celsius. Still, with a sea temperature of just 9oC, I was glad to hear that none of the intrepid kayakers had fallen out of their boats upon their return later on in the day.

In the evening, after weighing anchor, it was time to welcome and meet our newcomers to Saga this cruise with a special cocktail party, before a delicious supper as usual (curry for the Captain) followed by the evening entertainment provided tonight by Dr Simon Fricker – in simple terms, a piano genius.

We would steam around 250 miles overnight eastwards across Iceland’s northern coast, before turning into the shelter of little Siglufjordur – a first port of call for myself and this ship.
