Funchal is one of my favourite ports, not just because it’s famous for eating a steak on a stone or because the best football player in the world (Cristiano Ronaldo) is from there, but the true reason is the beauty and nature of the island.

We arrived into Funchal a bit later than the normal, picking up the pilot at 0800 and we were alongside the berth around 0900.

There were no crane operations or garbage offload going on; therefore, I took this chance to head ashore into my favourite port. For days and days all I had thought about was eating a good pizza, especially from Pizza Hut! Funnily enough there is a Pizza Hut only 5 minutes’ walk from the terminal.

After I had my pizza I went for a walk around the beautiful town, exploring the sights and famous places. It was also a nice sunny and warm day which made this experience even better but unfortunately, there is never enough time to explore Funchal properly.

After a hectic 4 days of ports all the bridge team were looking forward to a day at sea to relax before our arrival in Lisbon the day after.

Funchal is also a good port for the passengers; the most popular tour was the sidecar experience with lots of talk about it.

Other tours around the island taking in the stunning scenery and profusion of flowers were also popular.
