1st March, 2019
We departed Dover on 27th February on a 15 night “Magic of the Northern Lights” cruise with the first stop in Bergen. With a very comfortable run across the North Sea we decided to arrive in Bergen early. We were due in at 0800 on 2nd March, however after discussion with our Head Office it was agreed that we would arrive at 1400 hrs on 1st March and give our Guests the added bonus of an overnight call in this great city. Pilot was embarked at 1130 at the Marstein pilot station and then it was 30 miles to our downtown berth. The weather was good and it was a very scenic run in. We were alongside and ready to disembark guests bang on 1400 hrs.
I have heard it mentioned several time before that “it always rains in Bergen” . This was certainly not the case today; the skies were mainly clear and the unexpected sunshine meant it was perfect for our guests on tours and those venturing off independently. I decided to stay on board during the afternoon and then wander ashore with my good friend Milija the Ships Doctor at 2000. It was a chilly but dry evening to walk to the city centre and sample a couple of the local beers. When the bartender asked for the equivalent of £19 for 2 small beers I nearly fell off my bar stool! Anyway the company was great and we had a good old chat about everything. With an overnight in port I always enjoy the “novelty” of waking up in the same place!! As you know I like my exercise so with some winter running gear in the drawer I “suited up” and went for a run around Bergen. I normally run 5K but this morning I got carried away and ended covering 9K, which I was very pleased with.
With departure set for 1630 all guest were back on board just beforehand, however unfortunately we had a slight problem with one of our lifeboat davits which meant sailing was delayed a few hours. The upside to this was an evening sail out from Bergen which was quite a spectacle with all the lights on the shore and the road bridge brilliantly lit up.
