Another fine day, now! Having crossed the traffic lanes last night and closed onto the north shore of Cape Breton, in came the fog. It was an early call, 0300! There are many similarities, navigationally and topographically between Cornerbrook and Sydney. Long Fjord type approaches, limited navigable water at the berth and both very very very foggy!

If you recollect, we had to miss Sydney out on the run up from St Johns, due to the stormy weather, and then had the overnight in Gaspe, so this is putting Sydney back into the itinerary. We did have a sea day scheduled between Cornerbrook and Halifax, which where we due to at following the call at Cornerbrook. However, there was just time to fit Sydney in-between Cornerbrook and Halifax, rather than a sea day. A bit of a challenge speed wise and we could not hang-round on manoeuvring the vessel. Speedy Gonzales was the thinking required – all the time!

I digress; embarking the Pilot at 0700; fortunately modern navigational tech-toys allowed us to find the Pilot boat, it was so thick you could not see the boat until it was closer than 100 meters. We felt our way through the fog and, just like Cornerbrook, the fog stated to lift just as we approached the berth. Ah, this is what Sydney looks like!

Safely berthed and the knitting out, the ship being ‘cleared’ on arrival, the Guest were marching ashore just after 0900. The day started to clear from 10.00 onwards and by noon we had some lovely spells of blue skies.

It was a short stay in Sydney, a function of squeezing the ’port’ in and so we were ready for sailing at 1400. Backing the ship down the Fjord, no room to swing anywhere near the berth, we finally disembarked the pilot at 1530 and made our way around the north shore of Cape Breton Island and set passage off the Southeaster shores of Nova Scotia for our high-speed run to Halifax.

Another Diamond dinner this evening and an early start in the morning, so toodle-pip.
