Las Palmas, Gran Canaria
Today at 08.00 am we arrived in the beautiful port of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. It was an early start for our guests, with the first of our excursions meeting at 08.15 am in the Britannia lounge. Nat our Shorex Manager and his team put together a great selection of excursions for our guests to enjoy. The most popular excursion of the day was Leisurely Gran Canaria, a 4 ½ hour tour taking in the beautiful sights of Puerto Rico, Puerto Mogan and Maspalomas. For those guests who were going ashore independently they could walk into town quite easily as we were docked right in the centre.
At 9.45am we had an emergency crew drill which saw all the crew donning their lifejackets as they were exercised in their emergency duties. This happens regularly to ensure that all crew are on top of their responsibilities, should we ever experience an emergency. Today we had inspectors on board to observe the drill as we have recently installed a new electronic emergency mustering system. Everything went really smoothly and I think the inspectors were happy with how the new devices were operating. The drill finished at approximately 11.00am and you could see all the crew dashing back to their cabins to get ready to go out and enjoy Las Palmas.
I stayed on board until the afternoon to do the final checks on the Today program for tomorrow. We usually print the program at 17.00 so it’s important everything is checked before then. At 15.00 I headed off the gangway to enjoy the delights of Las Palmas with my partner Ryan. We had a stroll along the promenade where they have a nice beach but unfortunately it wasn’t really beach weather today. After our walk we decided to go to the shopping centre which is located quite close to where the ship is docked. We went to the Chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor which is a favourite spot to dine for most of the crew. There were at least fifteen other crew members there when we arrived. After our meal we decided to head back to the ship as all aboard was 18.00 for crew members. On our way back we met two of our guests who had clearly enjoyed the shopping centre with about ten shopping bags between them!
We set sail from Las Palmas shortly after 18.45 on our way to our next destination: Arrecife, Lanzarote. We are due to arrive at 08.00 tomorrow morning with another early start for our guests on excursions.
In the Britannia Lounge at 21.30 we had the first performance from “The Four D’s”, a four part male harmony group .They performed a selection of songs from The Jersey Boys, Motown and even the great sounds of Doo Wap music. The Britannia lounge was completely full with every seat taken. Everyone was singing and clapping along it really was a fantastic show. After the show Perry Grant kept our guests entertained in Coopers and The Perfect Mood duo provided an evening of Latin sounds in the Drawing room. An early morning start doesn’t seem to stop our guests from knowing how to enjoy themselves!
