Saga Pearl II blog - Captains' blogs

28th July, 2018

Hello Saga Pearl II blog readers, I’m back again to blog away for our next cruise which is called “Wine, Walking and Tapas”. We will be heading to the western coast of France and the northern coast of Spain. Our ports of call are: La Pallice, France (for La Rochelle) / Bayonne, France / Gijon, Spain / Pasajes, Spain / Bordeaux, France / St. Nazaire

The team joining Captain Sunderland are: Chief Engineer Ciro, fresh back from his leave, Hotel Director Dawn, Cruise Director Kayleigh and myself Staff Captain Simon. This is now my third time taking over the Captain’s Blog and I do hope that you are enjoying my entries.

It is turnaround day today in our home of Dover. This morning we embarked our pilot at 0600 and we were all safely docked by 0700 on our usual berth Cruise Terminal 1. The weather today has been gusty winds and there were also a few rain showers, but by lunch time they had passed and the sun had come back out.

With the theme being Wine, Walking and Tapas we have pedometers for our guests so that they are able to track their steps each day, we will be doing Al Fresco Dining and we have wine testing taking place during the cruise. I have only been to La Pallice before, the rest of the ports are new to myself. The weather forecast is looking great for our ports with temperature heading up towards 40ºC in Bordeaux, factor 50 sun cream at the ready!

With everyone on board we carried out our Guest Safety Drill and made our final pre-departure checks. At 1900 Captain Nick gave the order to let go our lines and with the aid of two tugs due to the winds we manoeuvred off the berth, swung around to the south and proceeded out in to the Dover Straits. Our passage this evening and tomorrow will see us sail along the south coast of England passing Brighton, Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Tomorrow we will leave the English Channel and round the north western tip of France before proceeding south eastern towards our next port of La Pallice.

Wishing you all a pleasant evening and I shall return with my next instalment from La Pallice.
