One of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of the same DNA, the world’s two species of orang-utan are only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and are the largest tree-dwelling mammals.
Enjoy the exhilarating experience of a lifetime travelling into Borneo. Its rainforests are blessed with a stunning botanical diversity and unique wildlife which you can discover as part of a small group on this fascinating tour. You'll meet orang-utans of Sepilok and a stay on Selingan Turtle Island which gives you a great opportunity to see turtle hatchlings.
This tour includes two nights aboard aircraft if flying with Royal Brunei or with Malaysia Airlines.
Please note: Due to Selingan Island Chalet being the only accommodation on the island, it may be necessary for the itinerary to follow a different order on some departures. All excursions detailed will still be included, as will the total number of nights at each hotel/lodge. In addition, to ensure that you can enjoy a stay on Selingan, groups may be split to follow different itineraries on the same departure.
If you're happy walking for three or four hours a day and you don't mind steep slopes and rough ground, these moderately-paced tours should be perfect for you. This rating also applies to some of our Active Explorer cruises, as there will be gangplanks and ladders to negotiate.
This morning, head to the airport for the flight to Sandakan.
Take a boat ride to the Marine Park of Selingan Island, a haven for the endangered green turtle and hawksbill turtle, and stay overnight at the Selingan Island Chalet (2Q).
After dinner, learn more about turtles at the exhibition centre where you will meet one of the park's rangers, who patrol the beach each night to look for turtles laying their eggs. If you are lucky, you may be able to see this, and even help to release hatchlings into the sea.
