A wealth of history
Modern Croatia was probably founded in the early 7th-century and has undergone many changes during its turbulent history, before finally being recognised on January 15, 1992 by the United Nations and the European Union.
Krka National Park
In Krka National Park there is a series of beautiful waterfalls named Skradinski Buk. This is also the location of Croatia's first hydro-electric power station, which started supplying electricity to nearby Sibenik in August 1895.
Makarska
The coastal town of Makarska, set between the Adriatic and the Biokovo mountains on a horseshoe bay, is home to a Franciscan monastery in its old town which has an unusual collection of sea shells.
Plitvice Lakes National Park
Surrounded by three mountains – Pljesvica, Maia Kapela and Medvedak - Plitvice Lakes National Park has 16 distinctively coloured lakes which collectively cover an area of about two square kilometres.
Zagreb
The capital and largest city in Croatia, Zagreb has a history dating back to Roman times, and sometimes grants honorary citizenship to outstanding individuals – recipients including Mother Teresa and Margaret Thatcher.
