The historic town of Salvador flourished during the slave trade, and today the population has an African ancestry that is unique in South America.

The colourful old town, known as the Pelourinho, is one of the oldest settlements in the New World and a fascinating place to explore, dotted with churches, Portuguese colonial architecture and touches of African culture.
