Funchal (half day)
Visit Funchal, capital of Madeira, where many buildings have survived from the flourishing ‘sugar town’ of the 15th and 16th centuries.
The most central point is Sé Cathedral (late 15th/early 16th century). The construction of the Se highlighted Dom Manuel’s desire to build a new city. It was also in this area during the 16th century that the major governmental centres were built.
The entire area was soon occupied with the Fortress, the Bishop’s Palace, the Seminary and the Jesuit College. Another attraction is the old Governor’s Palace.
Hunt for bargains at the market and visit an embroidery factory shop.
Panoramic tour (half day)
This tour takes in some spectacular scenery, passing by Câmara de Lobos, where Winston Churchill used to paint, and continuing to Ribeira Brava.
Winding along the coast, you travel past Ponta do Sol, where it is said that the sun always shines. Here, the road forks inland to climb up to Paul da Serra, a magnificent plateau about 1,600 metres above sea level.
You then proceed downhill to Porto Moniz, famous for its natural rock pools.
In addition to the above, the following are included on holidays lasting 14 nights or longer. Subject to availability, guests staying fewer nights may be able to purchase these excursions:
Nun’s Valley and Monte (half day)
Enjoy a trip through beautiful countryside to the panoramic viewpoint of Eira do Serrado.
From here you can view the Nun’s Valley (Curral das Freiras), lying at the bottom of a volcanic crater. Stunning views can be enjoyed from here - a real photographer’s dream.
You also visit pretty Monte, famed for its beautiful church and its toboggan rides down the sloping streets to Funchal. These snowless toboggans, called carros de cesto, are guided by straw-hatted men and rides are available for approximately €15 per person or €25 for two (not included).
