To add to the thrill, you go down into the crater, where the village is situated. Here you may sample the local cherry liqueur and cake.

You also visit pretty Monte, famed for its beautiful church and its toboggan rides down the sloping streets to Funchal. These snowless toboggans, called carros de cesto, are guided by straw-hatted men and rides are available for approximately €10 (not included).

Winding along the coast, your tour takes you past Encumeada, stopping at Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe. You continue to São Vicente, where you enjoy a three-course meal, with breathtaking sea views.

Having crossed the plateau, you descend downhill to Porto Moniz, a small village on the north coast famous for its natural rock pools. You then head inland to climb up to Paul da Serra, a magnificent plateau about 1,600 metres above sea level.
