  • Tsavo East National Park
Tsavo is Kenya’s largest conservation area and is split into East and West zones by the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Both parks account for about 4% of the country’s surface area, and Tsavo East, the larger of the two, offers diverse scenery and excellent opportunities for game-viewing.
  • Chalet rooms
There are a total number of 40 deluxe en-suite chalet rooms at the Tsavo Ashnil Aruba Lodge, including six luxury tented camps that open out onto the park.
  • Galana River
Athi-Galana-Sabaki River is the second longest river in Kenya - it rises as the Athi River and enters the Indian Ocean as Galana River. It passes through Tsavo East National Park, where it is interrupted by a series of rapids, the Lugard Falls.
  • Red elephants
Tsavo East National Park is patrolled by some of the country’s largest elephant herds. These pachyderms are often referred to as ‘red elephants’ owing to their tendency to wallow in the red soil and mud predominant in the park.
  • Small group experience
Enjoy a stay at Tsavo Ashnil Aruba Lodge in a small group of 18 Saga guests or less at a time. Lying in the heart of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya, the lodge takes its name from the Aruba Dam, an oasis of water that forms an irresistible attraction to both man and beast in the otherwise dry and dusty park.

Kenyan Wildlife Centre (half day)

Visit the KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) Education Centre, where you attend a talk by a qualified park ranger.

Your speaker will describe the various types of flora and fauna to be found in Tasvo East National Park, and will also tell you about the construction of the Kenya - Uganda Railway, nicknamed the ‘lunatic line’. It was the building of this railway between 1895 and 1901 that prompted the creation of the National Park.

Crocodile Rock Picnic (full day)

After breakfast at the lodge this morning you are taken to the famous Lugard Falls. These falls on the Galana River were formed when lava flowed from Mount Kilimanjaro after an eruption millions of years ago.

The falls are approximately 100 metres in height and the water is home to a large number of crocodiles. The falls are named after Captain Frederick Lugard (1858-1945), who was Britain’s first pro-consul of East Africa.

By the river lies the Yatta Plateau, 30 metres high and 300 kilometres long, which is considered the longest in the world.  This plateau divides the Tasvo Plains and the Tana Delta.

A walk along the cliffs takes you to the panoramic Crocodile Point, where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful views while you eat your picnic lunch. Please note that this part of the excursion is subject to change in the event of poor weather.
