Day 1 UK to San Francisco
After taking Saga’s included UK door-to-door travel service to the airport, depart for your flight to San Francisco where you'll stay three nights at the Parc 55 (4Q).
Day 2 San Francisco
Begin the day with a guided tour of San Francisco, home of Lombard Street, the Twin Peaks, Alcatraz and Levi Strauss. See the business district and the towering Transamerica Pyramid, Union Square and Chinatown – the oldest in North America. You’ll then cross the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge to the town of Sausalito, with its picturesque setting on the edge of the Bay. B
Day 3 San Francisco
Today is at leisure for you to explore the city independently. B
Day 4 San Francisco to Eureka
Your journey north starts with a visit to the Point Reyes National Seashore, a rugged stretch of coast with rocky headlands and wide beaches flanked by forested hills and grassy plains, all providing a perfect environment for migratory birds and whales. Call at the small town of Ferndale and stroll down the main street, where gorgeous Victorian storefronts will entice you with antiques, artwork and candy. Spend the next two nights at the Best Western Plus Humboldt Bay (3Q) in Eureka. B
Day 5 Eureka
On an orientation tour of Eureka you’ll see the curiously eccentric Carson Mansion, celebrated as one of the best examples of American Queen Anne architecture. It also looks like it would be right at home in a ghost story! Later you head to the Humboldt Redwoods State Park to see the amazing redwood trees, some of which are thought be more than 2,000 years old, and reach a staggering 110 metres in height! B
Day 6 Eureka to Ashland
Cross into the state of Oregon en route to Ashland today. Your journey will take you through the Six Rivers and Klamath National Forests, where distant mountains rise above an endless sea of fir trees. When you arrive in Ashland, a lively university town, an orientation tour will show you downtown and the historic railroad district, filled with old houses, galleries, studios and inns. Spend two nights at the Ashlands Springs Resort (3Q). B
Day 7 Ashland
Today you visit the stunning Crater Lake. Formed in the caldera of a volcano, there are no rivers flowing into or out of it and it was filled with rainwater and snow melt over the course of centuries – this means that the water is some of the purest and clearest in the world. Plus, at just under 600 metres, the lake is the deepest in the US. B
Day 8 Ashland to Newport
Begin the journey along the Oregon coast at Coos Bay, where you visit Shore Acres State Park to see the formal gardens and amazing Pacific views. Continue to the town of Yachats, where the rocky coast is peppered with tide pools, creating a haven for crustaceans, molluscs and sea urchins. Finally arrive in Newport where you spend two nights at the Elizabeth Street Inn (3Q). B
Day 9 Newport
Spend the day at leisure exploring Newport, a charming coastal town with a working harbour. Perhaps comb the beach in search of fossils and agates or visit the historic Bayfront, where you can browse the shops and galleries and sample the local seafood – the clam chowder and Dungeness crab are heartily recommended! B
Day 10 Newport to Portland
As you make your way out of town you pause at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, set at the head of a rocky cape that’s home to harbour seals and seabirds. Then you can enjoy a tour of the Tillamook Cheese Factory, which has been producing cheddar for more than 100 years, complete with a tasting of different varieties. Your final stop is the trendy city of Portland, known for its wealth of craft breweries, tempting food carts and pretty parkland. Take a tour of the city, where you’ll spend the next two nights at Hotel Modera (4Q). B
Day 11 Portland
Visit the Lan Su Chinese Garden, which occupies an entire city block of Portland’s Chinatown, and admire the covered bridges, bamboos, orchids and lotus blossoms. You’ll also visit the International Rose Test Garden to see hundreds of different varieties of roses on display. This afternoon is at leisure. B
Day 12 Portland to Seattle
After a morning at leisure you’ll step aboard the Amtrack Cascades railway and journey through the glorious scenery of the Pacific Northwest, across the Washington State border to Seattle. Spend two nights at the Hotel Motif Seattle (4Q). B
Day 13 Seattle
An included tour shows you the highlights of Seattle from the Pike Place Market to Pioneer Square, edged by trendy bars, galleries, cafes and clubs. The tour concludes with a trip to the top of the Space Needle, where you can view the city, mountains and islands beyond. The afternoon is at leisure, perhaps join an optional trip to the Boeing Factory where you can see jumbo jets being built. B
