Day 2 Kolkata

Transfer to the Lalit Great Eastern (4Q) in the heart of 'Old Calcutta', for a two-night stay, with dinner tonight. D


Day 3 Kolkata

Victoria Memorial

Explore what was once British Calcutta, visit the Victoria Memorial and the Indo-Gothic St Paul's Cathedral. Later see a different side of the teeming, steaming city, with a visit to Mother Teresa's House to learn about her humanitarian work. B, D


Day 4 Kolkata-Neamati Ghat

MV Mahabaahu

Transfer to the airport for a domestic flight to Jorhat in the remote state of Assam, in north-east India. Continue to Neamati Ghat to embark MV Mahabaahu . Start your adventure with a short sunset cruise. B, L, D

Day 5 Sibsagar and Assamese lunch

Tea growing

Drive through rural Assam to Sibsagar, the ancient city of the Ahom kings. Visit its 18th-century lakeside temples, and see the remains of one of the great palaces. Later visit a tea estate for a leisurely Assamese lunch, learn about tea growing, and participate in a tea-tasting. B, L, D

Day 6 Majuli and Mishing Village

Majuli Island

Perhaps join the regular riverbank yoga session pre-breakfast. Relax as the ship cruises toward Majuli Island, the world's largest river island. Shrinking, as the monsoon steals land every year, this flat watery paradise, all carpeted with rice fields and water meadows, is the seat of Neo-Vaishnavite culture – an offshoot of Hinduism. Enjoy a performance of Satriya – a classical form of Indian dance and a performance by Vaishnavite priests. Cruise to a Mishing Village to learn about the culture of this tribe and see the stilted houses. Here the women continue the traditional craft of weaving cotton and silk, and, if you want to get something made up, there is a tailor on board ship! B, L, D

Day 7 River Safari

Kaziranga National Park

Cruise along the Eastern Range of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a boat safari, then sail to a deserted island and watch the night sky. B, L, D

Day 8 Bishwanath Ghat and Tea Estate/Jute Mill

Sail to the village of Bishwanath ghat, and meet local women selling home-woven cloth. Then, depending on the season, either visit a tea estate (Feb-Nov), or a jute mill to see this strong fibre being transformed into hessian sacks. B, L, D

Day 9 Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park

Make an early start to visit Kaziranga, a remote reserve, home to two-thirds of the world's population of one-horned rhino. Take a jeep safari here, in one of the world's finest wildlife reserves, where birds, elephants, buffalo, tigers, panthers and swamp deer roam undisturbed. Later cruise towards Guwahati. B, L, D

Day 10 Local villages and Peacock Island

Golden Langur

Learn about village life on the islands that dot the river, and visit Peacock Island, the smallest island on the Brahmaputra, to see the Golden Langur. This endangered monkey sports a luxuriant gold coat and a masked black face. You'll also see Umananda, a 17th-century temple dedicated to Shiva. Tonight enjoy a farewell dinner. B, L, D

Day 11 Kamakhya-Kolkata-UK

Kamakhya Temple

This morning look for the endangered long-nosed Gangeatic dolphins. Disembark at Kamakhya Temple and, flight times permitting, pay a visit. Transfer to Guhawati airport for your overnight flight to the UK, via Kolkata. B, L.
