Nerja, Costa del Sol

Known as Spain’s sunshine coast, the Costa del Sol is the liveliest of all the costas boasting round-the-clock entertainment plus the best weather in Spain. It is also famed for its sandy beaches and excellent golf courses, as well as being home to mountains, quaint Moorish villages and great cities such as Ronda.

Situated in the foothills of the Almijara mountains, Nerja is a seaside town at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol. A popular resort with the British, it has retained its Moorish appearance, with picturesque streets of whitewashed houses.

Alhambra Palace

Discover the Alhambra, a vast and elaborate fortress and palace. Built by Ibn Ahmar and later expanded by successors, this magnificent and imposing complex has ornate domed ceilings, colourful tiles and enigmatic inscriptions. It is perhaps most famous for the Patio de Los Leones, a delightful arcaded courtyard with a fountain of sculptured lions at its centre.

Almunecar

Visit Almuñécar, a pretty resort on Spain’s Costa Tropical, between the cities of Almería and Málaga. It is in a picturesque location surrounded by mountains, and its old quarter is dominated by a Moorish castle.

Almuñécar’s site is of ancient origin. The first settlement here is believed to have been a Phoenician colony, and Roman remains have been found in the area. Aside from the development of modern tourism, the chief industry is the growing of tropical fruit.

Gibraltar

The British Crown Colony of Gibraltar is a vast rock measuring 4½ by 1½ kilometres, with its highest point towering 423 metres above the Mediterranean. In Antiquity it constituted one of the legendary ‘Pillars of Hercules’, together with the rock of Abyla, on the North African coast 25 kilometres away. Gibraltar has been a British territory since 1704, and its familiar shops, red post boxes and policemen’s helmets form a strange sight in the south of Spain.

Drive along the coast to Gibraltar for a tour of the rock by minibus. Entrance to St Michael’s Cave, about 300 metres above sea level, is included, and you will also see the famous Barbary Apes, the last wild apes in Europe. You can also shop for bargains in Main Street.

You must bring your passport. There can be delays when crossing the border between Spain and Gibraltar, and bags may be inspected.

Granada City Tour

Nestling below the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is one of the loveliest cities in Spain. It was the last Moorish city to fall to the Christians, in 1492.This Andalusian city is justly proud of its delightful location and for the richness of its Moorish architecture, which is equal to anything in North Africa.

Attractions include the Royal Chapel, where the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella are buried. It adjoins the cathedral built in the early Renaissance style on the site of the former mosque.

This excursion involves quite extensive walking, including numerous flights of stone steps.

Lecrin Valley

The Lecrin Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty, which has not yet experienced the mass tourism seen along the coastal strip and parts of the Alpujarras.

A number of delightful small towns and villages includes Acequias, Beznar, Tablate and Talara, sometimes known as Lecrin. The valley is home to over 300 species of wild flowers, 66 of which are endemic to this area, and wild animals including boars and mountain goats.

The valley is especially beautiful in springtime, when the almond trees are in blossom and the distant peaks of the Sierra Nevada are still capped with snow.

Ronda

Originally a Roman and then a Moorish stronghold, Ronda was captured from the Moors in 1485 and refounded by the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella.

The city is divided by the dramatic ‘El Tajo’ Gorge. With its narrow streets, Ronda is best explored on foot. The energetic may like to walk down from the Plaza del Campanillo to the river, for panoramic views of the city and its old and new bridges.
