Bay of Cádiz

Spain continues to dazzle travellers with its amazing attractions. The country's famous costas boast beautiful sandy beaches and warm weather, and they are the perfect destination if you're seeking sunshine.

The Bay of Cádiz, in Spain’s Costa de la Luz, is a protected area of natural beauty and a haven for plants and birdlife. There are many walking opportunities in this area that will reveal plenty of photo opportunities.

Cadiz

This ancient port is still partly surrounded by medieval fortifications. A resort as well as a busy naval base, Cádiz has a quaint old quarter and a cathedral where the great Spanish composer Manuel de Falla is buried. It is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Iberian Peninsula and the older part of the city, within the remnants of the city walls, is characterised by the antiquity of its various quarters (barrios). The Old City consists largely of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, while the newer areas have wide avenues.

Cape Trafalgar and Conil

Visit Cape Trafalgar, where the famous naval Battle of Trafalgar took place in which the Royal Navy of Lord Nelson defeated the combined Spanish and French fleet of Napoleon on October 21, 1805. There is a 34-metre high lighthouse that was built in 1860. Also visit the pretty Andalusian town of Conil. As with many tours of traditional hilltop villages, this excursion involves walking up steep slopes and over uneven ground.

Gibraltar

The British Crown Colony of Gibraltar is a vast rock measuring 4½ by 1½ kilometres, with its highest point towering 423 metres above the Mediterranean. In Antiquity it constituted one of the legendary ‘Pillars of Hercules’, together with the rock of Abyla, on the North African coast 25 kilometres away. Gibraltar has been a British territory since 1704, and its familiar shops, red post boxes and policemen’s helmets form a strange sight in the south of Spain. Drive along the coast for a tour of the rock by minibus. Entrance to St Michael’s Cave, about 300 metres above sea level, is included, and you will also see the famous Barbary Apes, the last wild apes in Europe. Also shop for bargains in Main Street. You must bring your passport. Please be prepared for delays when crossing the border between Spain and Gibraltar, and note that your bags may be inspected.

Jerez

The prosperous town of Jerez de la Frontera has given its name to sherry. Although prehistoric and Roman remains have been found at Jerez, the oldest surviving structure in the city is the Moorish Castle which has Arab baths and gardens, and which you can see on your city tour. No visit to Jerez would be complete without touring one of the sherry bodegas, and such a visit is included, ending of course with a tasting session. Jerez is also internationally known for its locally bred horses. The Royal Andalusian Riding School was established in Jerez in 1973.

Seville

Seville is the largest city in Andalusia and traces its history back to the Carthaginians and the Romans. After capturing it from the Moors in 1248, the Castilian monarchs made it their southern capital. During the 16th century, the city grew rich with the rapid growth of trade with the Americas. Seville has twice played host to major international exhibitions: the Ibero-American Fair in 1929 and EXPO in 1992. Famous buildings include the vast Gothic cathedral, the largest in Spain, which incorporates the Orange Tree Court and Giralda minaret from the mosque originally on the site. Another is the Alcazar, the former palace of the Moorish emirs which was rebuilt in its present form by Pedro the Cruel in the 14th century. No entrance charges are included. Please watch out for pickpockets and other petty thieves when walking around Seville.
