The hotel is on a slight incline just 50 metres from the beach. A bus service runs to Denia, one kilometre away, from a stop 30 metres from the hotel. There is also a train running west along the coast, from Denia to Alicante via Benidorm, with about seven through-trains daily each way. Alicante airport is one-and-a-half hours’ drive away.

Denia, Costa Blanca

Set at the foot of the Montgó mountains beneath a ruined 12th-century castle, charming Denia has more character than most of the resorts along this stretch of coast, and it still retains its provincial charm as a thriving fishing port. You can enjoy strolls to the bustling harbour, visit seafood restaurants, or explore Mount Montgó National Park, where there are many well-marked walking routes. Perhaps visit the Monday market for a few souvenirs too.

Benidorm

Benidorm stands on a rocky promontory that separates its two long sandy beaches, the Levante (Sunrise) on the east, and the Poniente (Sunset) on the west. Spend your time enjoying the bustle of the beachfront, or head to the original old town which is now the main shopping centre. This excursion takes you by coach to the resort where you'll be free to explore and shop at your leisure (there is no guided tour or entrance to any attractions).

Gandía

Situated on the southern tip of the Costa Azahar, or Orange Blossom Coast, Gandía is an affluent city renowned not just for its oranges but for being the former home of the Borjas – their palace is where St Francis Borja was born in 1510. The lifetime of Duke San Francisco Borja coincided with the golden age of the city and he went on to open colleges all over Spain and Europe. On this half-day trip you’ll stay in the cultural and commercial centre rather than visit the coastal strip, allowing you to see some of the historical monuments and seek out the enticing shops along Gandía's wide tree-lined avenues as well as those tucked away in its narrow streets. You’ll also have time to independently explore the Palace of the Borjas if you choose (entrance is not included).

Simat de Valldigna

Visit Simat de Valldigna, where King James II founded the Monastery of Saint Mary of Valldigna. According to tradition, the king passed through a valley (then called Alfandech) after battles against the Muslims in Alicante and Murcia. Impressed by its fertility and beauty, he said to the abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Santes Creus that this was a ‘valley worthy of a monastery of his order’. The abbot answered ‘Vall dignified’ (‘Worthy Valley’ – hence Valldigna). The restored monastery is now used as an arts centre (the trip doesn't included a guided tour of the monastery).

You then visit Calpe and the Peñón de Ifach which towers from the sea to a height of 332 metres, and continue inland through the countryside to admire the fantastic scenery.

Valencia

This tour of Spain’s third-largest city starts with a visit to the Fallas Museum, where you will find out more about the history behind this great fiesta – the fallas themselves are huge papier-maché sculptures. Next is a visit to one of the biggest indoor markets in Spain, followed by a guided walk past the cathedral and basilica. After some free time for lunch, a final stop is made at the City of Arts and Science, where there is an opportunity to take photographs of the superb modern buildings and bridges. This excursion involves a fair amount of walking with a local guide.
