Albir, Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca has great beaches, a favourable climate and a coastline dotted with ancient ports such as Valencia, bustling tourist resorts and traditional fishing villages.

Albir is a relaxing resort with a pebble beach, along the coast from Altea. There is a wide selection of bars, restaurants and shops, and it is surrounded by citrus groves.

Valencia

Drive past citrus groves and rice fields to tour Spain's third-largest city. The cathedral dates from 1262 and, lying to the right of the main entrance, in the flamboyant Gothic-style Capilla del Santo Cáliz, is what is claimed to be the Holy Grail, the chalice from which Jesus sipped during the Last Supper. Plaza de la Virgin occupies the site that was once the forum of Roman Valencia, the spot where its main north-south and east-west highways met. Beside the cathedral is the church of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados, home to the ornate, silk-robed statue of Our Lady of the Abandoned Ones, the patroness of Valencia. You'll also visit UNESCO-listed La Lonja, a former silk exchange building dating back to the 15th century and built in flamboyant Gothic style. Please note: This excursion involves quite extensive walking with a local guide.

Elche and Alicante

Take a trip to Elche to see the ochre-coloured houses that highlight its Moorish roots, the ruined Moorish fortress – Alcázar de la Señoría – and the UNESCO-protected palm grove of some 200,000 palms. From here head for the bustling port and provincial capital of Alicante, known for its luminous skies – in fact the Roman's called it Lucentum, the ‘city of light’. Attractions include the stylish promenade, cathedral of St Nicholas, the baroque Town Hall and Castillo de Santa Barbara fortress.

Finestrat

The charming inland mountain village of Finestrat, though geographically distant from the ocean, commands breathtaking views across the mountains to the Mediterranean beyond. It lies in the mountain area of Puig Campana and retains a distinct Moorish influence with narrow cobbled streets and brightly coloured houses.

Guadalest

This tiny historic village sits on a peak between the mountain ranges. A natural strongpoint, it was used by the Moors as a fortress centuries ago – you enter the remains of the fort via a crevice in the rock. Guadalest is famous for its lacemaking and crochet work, and shops selling artisan work lie in the heart of the village.

Lying in the eastern end of the Iberian peninsula is a stunning mountain massif that sweeps down to the coast. This spectacularly beautiful and little-known landscape is beloved by walkers and mountaineers. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon travelling past fields of almond and olive trees as you head up into the mountains to take in the views and sniff the air, heavy with fragrance of wild herbs.

The town developed trading connections with Ecuador and Venezuela in the 19th century, importing cocoa. A chocolate industry sprang up and Villajoyosa is now famous for its particular confectionary. Enjoy a guided tour of a chocolate factory – with the opportunity to taste the product – followed by a visit to the local market.

Spend time at the port of Jávea, whose modern harbour was built during the 1950s. Its landmark is the Fisherman’s Church, built in 1967 and shaped like an oval boat keel. You then visit Calpe and the Peñón de Ifach which towers from the sea to a height of 332 metres, and continue inland through the countryside to admire the fantastic scenery.
