Stroll along the flower-strewn Funchal Lido promenade into the city centre, three kilometres away (or catch a local bus from a stop 20 metres from the hotel). Here you can admire the Gothic-style cathedral, see how Maderian wine is made and sample some of this amber elixir at a wine lodge or catch a cable car up to the village of Monte before riding back down on one of the famous toboggans! Alternatively, relax at a pavement cafe and enjoy the ebb and flow of life in the Madeiran capital. The hotel is approximately a 25-minute drive from the airport.

Quinta da Boa Vista

Benefiting from a beautiful collection of colourful blooms such as the scarlet passionflower, South African daisies and the sky-blue Plumbago, the garden at Quinta da Boa Vista is a feast for the eyes. Flowering all year round, this exhibition will always amaze.

Ribeiro Frio

Climb to the central mountain range to Ribeiro Frio or 'cold river'. As the name suggests, you may need a few extra layers for this high, colder and more humid region. The streams feed the evergreen native woodlands which are designated reserves for Madeiran plants such as strawberry trees, giant buttercups and mauve wallflowers. The beginning of a levada – a system of irrigation typical to Madeira – can be seen cutting through the rocks, and you will walk parts of two levadas to see the natural landscape.

Explore woodlands decorated with oriental bridges, gateways, ponds and fountains, while the trees and ferns provide a stunning background for ancient Portuguese window frames, statues and tiles. There are oriental pools filled with Koi carp, as well as the world's best collection of prehistoric cycad plants.

Visiting between November and April means you'll have a good chance to see the camellias in bloom – especially the less-common Chinese varieties which boast huge flowers!
