Malta

Set in the heart of the Mediterranean between Sicily and North Africa, Malta is blessed with approximately 300 days of sunshine each year and makes the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday.

It is not just the climate that attracts visitors to the shores of this magical island though – history abounds here and there are plenty of interesting sites to take in, as well as a warm and welcoming atmosphere that immediately makes British holidaymakers feel at home.

Gozo

Travel by coach and ferry (25-minute sailing) to Gozo for an island tour. First stop is Dwejra Point, where you can see the Azure Window, a remarkable rock formation. You also visit the pilgrimage centre of Ta’Pinu, where a large neo-romanesque church marks the spot on which a peasant woman heard the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1883. In the afternoon you visit Victoria, the capital of Gozo, where there will be an included audio-visual show. As Gozo is a very small island, the import of new coaches is strictly limited to avoid congestion, so the coaches used for this excursion may be of a lower standard than in Malta.

Hagar Qim and Blue Grotto

Visit the megalithic temple complex built between 3600-3200 BC, making it older than the pyramids of Egypt! Only these stone temples remain of the first people to live on Malta, but they are surprisingly sophisticated. The temple, excavated in 1839, has revealed some important information and artefacts, including various altars, which tell us something of their religious culture. Early settlers, probably from Sicily, worshipped a ‘mother goddess' and some of their ‘fat lady’ statues representing fertility, are now on display at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. Afterwards, enjoy a photo stop on the cliff paths above the Blue Grotto caverns to see the attractive rock arches and intense colour of the water beneath them.

In the Footsteps of the Knights and Harbour Cruise

A day to experience the majesty and history of Valletta, with visits to two of the island’s most popular tourist attractions. The tour begins with a cruise around the Grand Harbour, taking you into every creek of the harbour and giving you a detailed commentary of the history of Valletta and the Three Cities. This is followed by a guided tour of the Hospital of the Knights of St John. Work started here in 1574 and it was considered to be one of the best hospitals in Europe. In 1676, the then Grand Master founded the school of Anatomy and Surgery, which was the forerunner of the Medical school at Malta University. The excursion concludes with a 45-minute viewing of the audio-visual Malta Experience. A snack lunch is included within the price of this excursion.

Mosta and Mdina

This excursion starts with a visit to Mosta in the centre of the island. Here you'll see the Church of St Mary which you may have glimpsed from high points on the island, thanks to its vast dome, one of the largest in the world, and 22 feet wider than our own St Paul's Cathedral in London. Your trip continues to Mdina, the former capital of Malta before the Knights of St John transferred this honour to Valletta. Mdina, a beautiful city of honey-coloured stone was built by Arabs and protected by surrounding walls. As the seat of power the city was home to the wealthiest islanders and there are many grand buildings here. The narrow streets, designed to keep the city cool, mean that traffic is restricted. Right outside the city is the suburb of Rabat where you'll find the day-to-day requirements for modern life – banks, shops, bars, restaurants and a market. Also in Rabat you'll find St Paul's Church and Grotto and the Catacombs, all of which you can visit on another optional excursion.

St Pauls Catacombs and Roman Domus

Your first stop on this tour is St Paul’s Church, which was built in 1575 over the grotto from which St Paul once preached. Next, you visit St Paul’s Catacombs, an extraordinary labyrinth of narrow passages and the largest complex of its kind in Rabat. You also see Domus Romana, the Roman house found just outside the walls of the Mdina. The building dates from the 1st century BC and during the course of its excavation, some exceptionally fine mosaic work was uncovered, along with a selection of artefacts that are now displayed in the museum.

Valletta

Enjoy a tour of Malta’s lovely capital, a veritable open-air museum showcasing the contributions to the great architecture and art collections of the city made by the Knights of St John nearly five centuries ago. No wonder then that it's a European Art City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Entrance to St John's Co-Cathedral is included. Admire the rich decoration of the interior and two paintings by Caravaggio, including the only one he ever signed. The magnificent harbour, often described as the most beautiful in the Mediterranean, was a contributing factor to making Malta such a desirable conquest through the years. Today it's the focus of many miltary and historical events.

Villages and Gardens

Malta is dotted with simple traditional villages and on this excursion you'll have the chance to experience their timeless atmosphere. In this Catholic country most are set around parish churches which remain the focal point of village life. Parish saints are celebrated at festas featuring fireworks, religious processions, music and feasting. You'll also visit a local garden, although the location varies according to which is at its best in a particular season. Finally, you visit a local gold market where you can see silver filigree being made. This is decorative jewellery made from fine silver wires soldered together in intricate lace-like patterns and it's become a popular souvenir of a trip to Malta. This excursion may sometimes operate in reverse.
