Vico Equense, Italy

Vico Equense is a hidden gem of a town on the northern coast of the picturesque Sorrento peninsula. It has an atmospheric old town, with narrow streets and squares lined with bars and cafes, good shopping opportunities and a small marina.

Paestum

As the poet Shelley described, Paestum's setting is ‘inexpressibly grand’ and upon arrival you'll immediately see for yourself why the ancient Greeks chose it as their site in the 6th century BC. A jagged mountain outcrop provides the backdrop to one side with the Mediterranean on the other. Between are fields of tall grasses and wildflowers with three Doric temples taking centre stage. The museum here will shed light on Paestum's history, from its founding to Roman rule.

The National Archaeological Museum in Naples

Many of Italy's greatest treasures are housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. From gladiator helmets, swords and trumpets, to beautiful frescoes and mosaics, a great array of Pompeii and Herculaneum artefacts are here for you to see. While some exhibitions may be closed, you will still find ample to fill your time, and you'll gain a fascinating insight into the heritage of the Campania region.

Phlegrean Fields

A strangely beautiful landscape scarred by volcanic craters awaits your discovery. This 13-kilometre-wide caldera west of Naples was hailed as the gateway to Hades – the Underworld – by Homer and Virgil in classical times thanks to its scattering of lava pools, geysers and hot mud.

The Romans embraced the area's immense natural beauty, building grand villas, baths, and aqueducts, and your tour today will take you to Pozzuoli to see the world's third largest amphitheatre, a highly sophisticated structure for its time. Your tour also encompasses the Roman cistern with its 50 vaulted chambers that together create an impressive sight. Another highlight is a visit to Cuma, which was founded by the ancient Greeks in 730 BC, making it the first of their colonies on Italian land. Here you can visit the legendary Cave of Sybil, a Roman holy destination where the oracle, Sybil of Cuma, allegedly foretold the Trojan hero Aeneas that he would go on to found the Roman Empire.

Pompeii

The amazing archaeological site that is Pompeii needs little introduction. Since excavations first began in the 18th century, the thought of an ancient Roman town preserved as it was nearly 2,000 years ago continues to defy imagination. As you walk along streets frozen in time by the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD, you'll find it hard not to be impressed by the many villas, shops, baths, statues, fountains and squares. Probably the most touching sights are the homes, many still with wall-paintings and even one with a mosaic panel bearing the legend, ‘beware of the dog’.

Herculaneum

Herculaneum is another perfectly preserved site that fell victim to Vesuvius' epic temper. Unlike Pompeii though, rather than being smothered in pyroclastic ash, the once chic residential suburb was buried in a superheated wave of mud 18 metres deep. Over half the site is still to be excavated but what has been uncovered so far has revealed grand villas aligned to the standard Roman grid format. You will also visit Oplontis on the outskirts of Pompeii where a few villas belonging to ancient Rome's upper class have been unearthed.
