Crete, Greece

The largest and most southerly of the Greek Islands, Crete is an ideal destination for unwinding in the Mediterranean sunshine.

Heraklion

Enjoy a guided tour of Heraklion, and visit one of its lively fruit and vegetable markets. Heraklion is by far the biggest city on Crete, and is one of the five largest in Greece, with over 120,000 inhabitants. The town centre is still surrounded by massive walls, built by the Venetians.

You travel past the port, the arsenals and the Cathedral of St Minas.

Knossos Palace

This ancient Minoan palace is believed to be more than 4,000 years old and once boasted an amazing 1,400 rooms. It was mainly excavated and partly reconstructed by Sir Arthur Evans from 1899 onwards. Mythology tells us that it was the home of King Minos, whose wife Pasiphae bore the Minotaur, half-man, half-bull, which lived in a labyrinth until it was slain here by Theseus. The extensive complex of buildings is laid out on four levels on Kefála hill, and was originally of two and three storeys. Its rooms, halls and passages date back to 2,500BC, although the remains now visible belong mainly to the Third Palace, which was built after 1700BC. Please note that visiting the palace involves walking on uneven ground and negotiating several flights of stone steps.

Cretan countryside

Discover tiny mountain villages and the way of life and customs of the Cretan people. Step back in time by taking the old road south from Heraklion to the village of Peza, and visit the local winery to taste the local wine. You also visit an agricultural museum, where you will be shown how wine, olive oil and soap were produced in years gone by. Visit the village of Trapsanos, where local people produce the large, hand-made ‘pythyaria’ – pots which have been used to store goods since the time of the Minoans, thousands of years ago.

Western Crete

This tour shows you the wild and rugged landscape of western Crete, including snow-capped mountains, delightful villages and beautiful coastlines. You visit Chaniá, the former capital, known as the ‘Little Venice’ of Crete. It has the largest covered market in the Balkans, and a street devoted almost entirely to leather goods, where you can see items on sale such as handmade boots, shoes and handbags. There is also a beautiful Venetian harbour, where scenes from the movie Zorba the Greek were filmed. Later, you visit Rethymnon, Crete’s third-largest town, on the north coast. Known as the ‘City of Scholars’, the old part of the town has numerous Venetian palazzos, Turkish houses with wooden balconies and a number of small 18th-century mosques. You have free time to wander in the old streets of the town, or maybe buy a coffee in a harbourside coffee bar.

Cretan Night

Music and dancing are almost a way of life for the Cretan people. This tour takes you to Anopolis village, which is set in the rolling hills of central Crete. You are welcomed on arrival with the local firewater drink (raki), the start of a memorable evening. There is time to wander through the village, perhaps buying a drink in a cafénion, lighting a candle in the Greek Orthodox church or looking for bargains in the handicraft shops. Your evening meal is taken in a local taverna, where you will be treated to a typical Cretan menu with plenty of local wine and a display of traditional Greek and Cretan dancing. The colourful costumes, fire dance and a special routine from the film Zorba the Greek all contribute to a memorable evening.

Ierapetra town

This excursion takes you to the town of Ierapetra, which has two claims to fame – that it’s the southern-most town in Europe, and the sunniest. En route you’ll stop within sight of the Minoan archaeological site at Gournia, before travelling past the entrance to the Ha Gorge – a wild and mostly inaccessible rock formation that’s home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. Then it’s on to Ierapetra itself and a visit to the small archaeological museum that houses a range of Minoan artefacts, a selection of headless Roman statues, and a painted sarcophagus. Stroll along the promenade, explore the local shops or perhaps people watch from a cafe near the harbour before heading to your hotel via a photo opportunity in the mountains

Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga

Drive east along the coast to Agios Nikolaos. This popular resort is commonly referred to as ‘Ag Nik’ by British visitors, and is built around a natural salt lagoon, which is linked to the sea to form an inner harbour. The attractive town centre has numerous bars and cafes. Later you take a boat from Elounda Village to the island of Spinalónga. At its northern tip is a Venetian fortress, which was built in 1579 and enlarged in 1585. It withstood Turkish sieges for longer than any other Cretan stronghold and was used for many years as a leper colony. The hospital closed in 1956, and since then the island has been uninhabited. The buildings flanking the cobbled streets within the massive stone walls are now picturesque ruins.
