Day 1 UK to Beijing

Enjoy your flight

After taking Saga’s included UK door-to-door travel service to Heathrow, depart in the afternoon for your overnight flight to Beijing.


Day 2 Beijing

Stay three nights at the New Century Hotel (4Q). Dinner is at your hotel. D


Day 3 Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square

Today's half-day included sightseeing tour starts with a visit to Tian'anmen Square. From here, walk to the Forbidden City, home to the imperial palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties for nearly 500 years. Later, you may wish to join an optional rickshaw ride to the Hutongs. This evening you can enjoy a traditional Peking duck dinner at a local restaurant. B, L, D

Day 4 The Great Wall and Summer Palace

The Great Wall of China

An included tour will take you to the Great Wall and the 18th-century Summer Palace, set in an immense park just outside Beijing. You will also have the chance to visit a jade carving workshop before dining at a local restaurant. This evening, you can join an optional excursion to Beijing's stadiums of the 2008 Olympic Games. Optional excursions

See the 2008 Olympic stadiums beautifully lit this evening. The £300 million National Stadium, also known as ‘The Bird’s Nest’ due to its iconic design, was the major competition venue for the 2008 Olympic Games and the 13th Paralympic Games, and was the stage for the dazzling opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium has a gross volume of three million cubic metres and is considered to be the world’s largest enclosed space. Its unique design was influenced by traditional Chinese ceramics, art and culture. The National Aquatics Centre, also known as ‘The Water Cube’ was the first building of its kind in China and houses a swimming pool deeper than most Olympic swimming pools. During the games, 25 world records were broken here! Entrance to the stadiums is not included.

Day 5 Beijing to Xi'an

Fly to Xi’an and, on an included visit, tour the Old City Wall which dates from the 14th-century Ming Dynasty. Stay two nights at the Grand New World Hotel (4Q). B, L


Day 6 Terracotta Warriors

This morning you'll visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, built in 652AD to store the scriptures brought back from India. It's then on to view the Terracotta Army comprising 8,000 life-size warriors. End the day with an optional Tang Dynasty Show. B, L, D

Optional excursions

cThe Tang Dynasty Show is a dramatic live performance that incorporates ancient musical instruments and songs. The Chang’an music and dance featured in the show originated in China over 1,000 years ago in the Tang Dynasty. It has been recreated using various historical records as well as by referring to ancient art and relics discovered in Xi’an.

Day 7 Xi'an to Nanjing

Confucius

Fly to Nanjing and enjoy an included visit to the Confucius Temples where you'll gain a fascinating insight into the great Chinese philosopher and his modern-day followers. Stay at the Jin Ling Hotel (4Q), with dinner at a local restaurant. B, L, D

Day 8 Sun Yatsen's Mausoleum and Chiang Kiashek Hall

Suzhou

On an included excursion visit Sun Yatsen’s Mausoleum and Chiang Kiashek Memorial Hall. Later, board a train to Suzhou and stay two nights at the Grand Trustel Aster Hotel (4Q). B, L

Day 9 Suzhou

Grand Canal

See the Chinese Master of Nets Garden – the most exquisite and well-preserved residential garden in Suzhou – on an included visit, and enjoy a short cruise on the Grand Canal before visiting the Embroidery Institute. B, L, D


Day 10 Suzhou to Shanghai

Travel by road to Shanghai to see the fabled Bund waterfront and go shopping along Nanjing Road. Later you may like to take an optional evening cruise on the Huangpu River. You stay two nights at the Jin Jiang Hotel (4Q). B, L, D

Optional excursions

Shanghai looks like a fairyland when lit at night, and you can see the city in all its splendour on this relaxing cruise along the Huangpu River. You'll see the city's most famous landmark, the Bund, which is beautifully lit along the harbour.

Day 11 Shanghai sightseeing

Yu Garden

See Yu Garden and the Temple of the Jade Buddha on an included visit, before spending the afternoon at leisure. This evening you may like to watch an acrobatic show. B, L, D

Optional excursions

Enjoy a thrilling circus show with demonstrations of Chinese acrobatic skills such as contortionists, foot juggling, hoop-driving and plate-spinning.

Day 12 Shanghai to UK

Flight home

Travel to the airport for your return flight to the UK, arriving in the evening for your onward UK VIP door-to-door travel service home.

Yangtze River Cruise

Post extension including all breakfasts, three lunches and all dinners  

After your main tour, extend your holiday with an upstream cruise along the famous Yangtze river. Stay four nights aboard the MS Century Sky followed by a one-night stay in Shanghai at the Jin Jiang Hotel (4Q). Enjoy included excursions to the Three Gorges Dam, Shennu Stream and to Shibaozhai Pagoda.
