Introduction

Set in the wildlife enriched Lowveld in Limpopo Province, this intimate lodge provides the perfect base from which to see Africa&rsquo;s indigenous animals and birds during thrilling game drives into Karongwe Private Game Reserve accompanied by local Shangaan game trackers.

Accommodation

There are just 24 suites, each featuring a veranda with garden views from which you can enjoy excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Each room has an en suite bathroom.

Food and Drink

Your stay is on a full-board basis and there is a free bar serving a selection of local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from 10am to 10pm daily.

Some meals are served in the outdoor ‘boma’ dining area, and dinners may be followed by traditional dancing.

The lodge staff will be happy to arrange special meals on demand, for those celebrating a special anniversary.

Located to the west of Kruger National Park, the Karongwe Private Game Reserve is home to a variety of indigenous African animals including elephant, lion, leopard and over 350 species of birds.

The town of Phalaborwa is a one-hour drive away. The lodge is approximately one hours' drive from Phalaborwa Airport.

Olilfants River Valley

Rich in both fascinating wildlife and spectacular scenery, the Valley of the Olifants is home to an array of indigenous flora and fauna, which are sustained by the waters of the Olifants River.

Flowing from the Drakensberg Mountains to the plains of the Lowveld, the river is one of the main tributaries of the Limpopo River and provides the main natural water supply to the area. The river attracts an abundance of African wildlife, including giraffe.

Game drives

Five game drive are included during your stay. The very best time to view wildlife is normally during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and late in the afternoon/early in the evening), when the animals will be more active. These drives take place on the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, accompanied by experienced rangers and Shangaan trackers. As you would expect, none of the wildlife sightings, whatever the season, mentioned in this itinerary are guaranteed.

Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is one of the leaders in the breeding and research of endangered species, and is a safe haven for orphaned and sick animals. Cheetah Conservation is one of their core disciplines as well as the release of captive-bred cheetahs back into the wild. Learn about the work of this fascinating place during a half-day guided visit.

Kruger National Park

Enjoy a full-day safari in Kruger National Park – one of the most famous game parks in the world. At almost the size of Switzerland, it's also one of the biggest, as well as being the oldest, established in 1898. You may be lucky enough to see some of the 'big five' here, as well as glimpses of zebra, cheetah, giraffe and hippo. Although you may have seen African animals in zoos, nothing can prepare you for seeing the animals in their natural environment. Please note that due to the road transfer from Shiduli Private Game Lodge to the Kruger National Park, this excursion is conducted in an air-conditioned minibus rather the open safari vehicles that are used within the Karongwe Reserve.

Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre

The Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre has been established to care for abandoned and injured wild animals and to reintroduce them, where possible, into their natural environment. The centre has also been responsible for a number of successful breeding programmes. You'll have the chance to see wildlife at very close quarters, such as lion, leopard, serval, lynx and honey badger, as well as crowned eagles and vultures. A unique feature is the opportunity to view wild dogs at close range. Finally, visit the Cheetah Breeding Centre, where you can see these magnificent felines, the fastest animals in the world.

Panoramic tour

Travel to some of the Limpopo Province’s most spectacular natural landmarks on this tour. Make a photo stop at scenic Blyde River Canyon, then visit Bourke’s Luck Potholes, rock formations carved out by the Blyde and the Treur rivers. You'll also view God’s Window, a vantage-point on the Drakensberg Escarpment with superb views across the Lowveld (a short uphill walk is necessary to do this).

Before your main holiday enjoy three nights in Cape Town. Our standard Cape Town extension is at the President Hotel Cape Town (4Q), located in the pleasant district of Bantry Bay, between the suburbs of Sea Point and Clifton and about five kilometres west of downtown Cape Town.

This large, elegant hotel has a bar, restaurant, hair and beauty salon and a gift shop. Leisure facilities include a gym and an outdoor swimming pool, and there are shuttle buses from the hotel to the Canal Walk Shopping Centre.

Alternatively, you can upgrade to the luxurious Table Bay Hotel (5Q) on a bed and breakfast basis, in the heart of Cape Town’s Victoria and Alfred Waterfront – the hub of one of the world’s most picturesque working harbours.

Fairmont Zimbali Resort

The Fairmont Zimbali Resort is on the lush sub-tropical ‘Sugar Coast’, 42 kilometres north of Durban, and boasts ocean and forest views. Facilities at the Lodge include five swimming pools, a spa, fitness centre, two tennis courts, and an 18-hole golf course, designed by Tom Weiskopf, nearby (extra charge). The hotel has a number of restaurants where you'll take our meals, lunch will be a light option in Bite, dinners will be taken in the Coral Tree restaurant which offers a different themed buffet each night ranging from: Asian, Italian, Indian and South African.

All 154 air-conditioned rooms have a video on demand system, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryer, safe, iron and ironing-board, minibar (extra charge).

Other optional activities include forest trails or a deep-sea fishing trip: if you are lucky you may see dolphins or whales too. A daily shuttle bus runs to the local seaside village of Ballito for a small charge.

Two half-day excursions to the city of Durban and the pretty seaside village of Ballito are included in your stay.

After your main holiday look forward to spending a further seven nights at the newly refurbished Blue Marlin in Scottburgh, South Africa. This is an exceptionally welcoming, relaxed hotel close to the shops and cafes of the seaside resort.

Your included excursions

Duran sightseeing (half day). Your tour shows you the beautiful Botanical Gardens and the Indian Market, where you can find almost everything from exotic jewellery to fruits and spices. Nearby you can view the Hindu temple and the Juna Mosque, reputedly the largest in the southern hemisphere. You drive along the Golden Mile, see Durban from the entrance to the harbour and pass through the city centre, viewing Farewell Square, where the British fleet settled in 1824.

Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve (half day). Encompassing forest, grassland, rivers, wetlands, cliffs and dams, this 2,189 hectare reserve is a haven for wildlife. During your visit you may spot zebra, blue wildebeest, black-backed jackal, cranes and hornbills.
