Hurghada

Stretching along the Red Sea coast, Hurghada has developed at an incredible pace to become one of the country’s most popular resorts. With its golden sandy beaches and precious reefs there are naturally many opportunities to explore the underwater world, and behind the resort’s modern façade the heart of this former fishing village continues to beat, especially in the bustling bazaar of the old town.

Cairo by air

Visit Cairo, the largest city in Africa, a combination of an ancient Muslim city and a bustling modern metropolis. Your guided tour visits the world-famous Egyptian Museum which contains an unrivalled collection of works of Pharaonic art, some dating back more than 5,000 years. The best-known objects in the collection are those found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, excavated in 1922 by Howard Carter. You continue to the Sphinx of Giza, one of the great enigmas of Egypt, and the three Pyramids of Giza, the symbol of Egypt. Although now in the suburbs of Cairo, they are still as impressive as when first built 5,000 years ago. Lunch and a soft drink included. The flight takes from approximately 50 minutes. Entrance to the interior of the Great Pyramid is not included. From time to time, the pyramids are closed for restoration work and entrance to the interior may be prohibited.

El Gouna

El Gouna is a modern Red Sea resort created around 1990 in which you will find a beautiful marina surrounded by shopping arcades, bazaars and a wide selection of restaurants, bars and cafes. El Gouna specialises in watersports and there are two main beaches, Zeytuns Beach – located on its own island – and Mangroovy Beach. A network of canals allow many houses to have their own strip of beach. Most of the canals are crossed by small stone bridges. The town boasts a small aquarium, a small museum and a Coptic Church, Church of St Mary and the Archangels. There is also a golf course designed by Gene Bates and Fred Couples. A second course is due to open in 2012. The resort’s award-winning architecture brings together a blend of traditional and modern elements and is the work of architects such as the Italian Alfredo Freda and the American Michael Graves.

Luxor by road

This is a very long day, but an opportunity to visit Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. You sail across the Nile, with lunch included at the East Bank, and then continue to Karnak Temple. The Valley of the Kings, where the Pharaohs were buried, has no fewer than 62 rock-cut tombs of which about ten are normally open to the public. You cannot take your camera into the Valley of the Kings. Luxor, the ancient capital of Thebes, was described by Homer as the ‘hundred-gated city’. The Temple of Karnak, dedicated to the god Amon-Ra, is one of the largest places of worship in the world, covering an area of about 60 acres. The smaller, but equally interesting Luxor Temple, is in the centre of Luxor. The present-day city has spread out along the east bank of the Nile to the north and south of its ancient temples

Snorkelling at Gifton Island National Park

You are taken by boat to Gifton Island, the second largest island in the Red Sea after Shedwan Island, for a day’s swimming and snorkelling and relaxing on the soft white sand. Renowned for its breathtaking beauty, Mahmya is part of a National Park and is rich in marine life. It covers approximately 3,000 square metres of Gifton Island and its borders are surrounded by crystal blue water teeming with coral reef and several species of brightly coloured fish. Two kinds of birds in danger of extinction are found on Gifton Island: the Kittiwake and a specific kind of eagle. One of the rare turtles lives on the beaches. Characterised by rare geological compositions, its rock intensity indicates that Gifton Island dates back more than 33 million years. Snorkelling equipment is included in the price of this excursion, as is lunch and a soft drink.
