Captain Philip Rentell

Captain Rentell joined a cadet training ship on the Thames in London at 17, and later the British and Commonwealth Company.

In 1980 he obtained his Master’s Certificate and worked on a number of different vessels before eventually joining Cunard Line.

After his work as a senior watchkeeper on QE2, he took a Masters position with a Florida–based cruise company and has been a Master ever since, working for ten years with Airtours on their Sun Cruise ship.

He joined the Saga family in 2005 aboard Saga Rose, and has divided his time as Master of both Saga Sapphire and Saga Pearl II, leading the intrepid ‘Saganauts’ on many exciting adventures.

2016 was an exciting time for Captain Rentell as he became one of the first recipients of the new Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service.

However, this year will be Captain Rentell’s last year with Saga Cruising. His final cruise departs from Dover in May 2017.

We would like to wish him every happiness in the future, and thank him for all his hard work at the helm.

This season is my last with Saga Cruising but there’s still so much to look forward to. I hope to see plenty of familiar faces on my last couple of cruises, and
celebrations all round! Quote
